Calf prices

Help Support CattleToday:

I see on the reports from the 2 sales I go to that calf prices went back up. Top 4 wgt steers are well above $3.00 and even the top 500 weight steers beat $3.00. I didn't go this week as weather had the freeway shut down at time.
Whats the prices going to be by spring? Cow price finally coming up here. Plus slaughter cows were lots higher today. Up to 1.15 but several at 1.10

Couple sales from local Louisiana barns last week.

Took 30 to graded feeder sale this morning... 28 graded and 2 were called short so they got a ride back home. They will sell better at the regular sale... have more to go... the ones we took were the biggest... weighed more than son thought... 2 hit 935 lbs each, most in the 8 wts and a few in the 7 wts... We'll see sale starts at 6 this evening for the graded ones. Going to move more than we originally planned I think... early/mid March I think there will be a WHOLE bunch taking a ride to town... going to keep more heifers unless the prices get crazy high... but we need to either buy some breds or c/cf pairs... have culled a bunch... some opens/old age and a few for attitudes.... got 4 more and a bull to go next week.....
Don't expect to get the prices you are seeing in the areas where they do not have to be trucked so far... but understand that at this graded sale, there are some different buyers than we usually have at the sale a little closer... and some 4 wts here even topped $3.00 last week...

Today I hauled in a cull cow and bull for the neighbor. I hung around and watched the sale for 2 hours. Highlights. They sold 139 black steers weighing 538 for $3.31. I don't know that I could cover that check. That draft of steers cost $247,528. Right behind them was 25 black steers from the same ranch that weighed 604 and sold for $3.05. The next lot was a dozen red steers from the same place weighing 602. They sold for $3.02. Earlier I had watched a ring load of black steers weighing 570 sell for $2.85 except they cut out one steer that was a longhorn or Correinte cross it sold for $1.90. Multiple 6 wgt heifers sold for $2.70. It was interesting watching but too rich for my blood.

A few years ago I sat at a cattle auction and watched farmers in a bidding war on $3000 cow prices with no calf. I just shucked my head and said they must have money to burn because that is what they are doing. It is happening again cause unlike Walmart farmers prices come down.
