    Cost of National Shows

When talking about your breed Junior National Shows, cost should never be a concern. Remember, you're not spending money on a Show; you're investing in the future of your children. Just make sure you GO!

    sit boy sit

That's a HOOT!!!! My daughter had a puppy dog lazy steer in 1992 that I taught to lead backwards by pulling on his tail. I lead him all around the ring by the tail in Denton, Tx in the Adult Showmanship contest at the AJMAA show. It was only good enough for 2nd place!

    Cost of Premium Feeds

Since I no longer have any cows, I haven't bought any feed in a while. I believe our local mill is seeling our mix for $250/ton, or $6.25/bag. Mineral is not included, so add in a few cents/bag. It works as well, or better than the branded feeds; you just have to know how to feed.

    Possible Heifers

Cowboy, I assume that "out of" means Sired by. If this is the case, I much prefer the Lifeline heifer. She is just so much better balanced than the other calf. When talking price, I would pay double for her verses the Ground Zero calf for showing in a breeding heifer class. Do you know the...

No fit blow and show shows

The Blow 'n Go shows give an even bigger advantage to those calves with the best hair and daily hair work. A calf which has hair trained to natually "pop" can be moosed on the legs and tailhead, then have the body hair readied for show, and walk into the ring looking completely fit. The...

How Much $ for Show Calf

Diamond G, This is a real good topic, with lots of good replies. From my 16 years of experience as a MA breeder and our 11 years of showing, I say there is no right or wrong answer to your question; only opinions. Opinions are what the Show Ring is all about. The judging is completely...

    Custom fitting rates

Fitters for hire are just like lawyers. The better their reputation, the more they can charge. If nobody knows you, you aren't worth much.

    Need some advice

I completely agree with Jovoid. If you can't get a calf gentle in 4 weeks, it's either you have no idea what you're doing, or the calf is not worth the effort.

    Ford or Chevy

My Farm Truck from 1992 - 2003 was a Chevy 3500 dual wheel, 454 gas, 4 speed manual. We showed calves in 11 states, and I drove that truck as my daily ride during those years also. I then purchased a 2002 Ford F 250 4WD, with the 7.3 turbo diesel, 6 speed manual. I don't haul as much now, but...

    About Time???

Great Bull for siring Show Steers, and Market calves in general. I don't think you'll find many good breeders using him in hopes of producing Breeding Stock.

    How do i know?

Since you're in Texas, feed Martindale Developer, and don't add a thing. If she is not getting fat enough as a yearling, switch to the Finisher. You'll need to feed about 3% of body weight if you intend to compete. http://www.martindalefeed.com/productta ... =100325011

    loose trace mineral

I recommend you ALWAYS keep out a "QUALITY" loose mineral. Mineral blocks are worthless. You don't want a salt block either. They will cause reduced consumption of a loose mineral. Concerning mineral, quality means high priced. Don't waste your money on cheap mineral.

    Why all the fancy feed?

There are two things having to do with Show Cattle that few people ever master: Selection and Feeding Both require a greatly different approach from just raising calves to sell at the local Sale Barn. Selection is not that hard to grasp, but will present a tremendous cost if winning is...

    Tulsa Results!!

The carbonation will fill them out it a calf is a little gant from not drinking and eating well. 7Up does not cause them to bloat, just fill. I can't imagine that kind of drenching going on at Tulsa. There are usually officials everywhere. If the calf was sucked up bad enough for them to take...

    Tulsa Results!!

Seven Up & Sprite has been a common practice for years. Most of the time, one will add 1-2 liter to a 5 gal. bucket of water. We had one heifer that liked it straight. I don't think 7 Up could be classified as a foreign substance. If they were pumping or drenching, that's a different story...

Question concerning "composites" in the show ring

I almost hate to get into this thread, but I just can't leave it alone. As a person who has been a Breed Superintendant many times, and even more often responsible for checking tatoos and verifying papers, I know how the rules are interpreted at the National level, and down to the county. The...

    Show Calf question?

AMEN!! I would say you had it made until you hooked him to the ATV. Now you get to start all over again with a calf even more convinced that all you want to do is inflict pain.
