I tend to lose just a touch of faith in a report when on what is supposed to be the same grade of calves in the 300 to 400lbs range vary's in price 80cwt, but I'm not there, maybe there's a good reason. I sure would take about 10 pots of those 3wt Holsteins for 95 or even 100cwt.

Those are big ranges. I would only be guessing as I wasn't at the sale either, but I think color has alot to do with the range in prices. The black cattle always sell much higher than reds or whites.

Denver, how was Ava today? It's been a rough winter here, I am getting withdrawal from not getting to see any auctions. I am hearing feeders took a jump last couple days.

had about 700hd and a decent market, but our weather still isn't very good for loading calves, it's pretty muddy off the roads. 5wts were as high as 2.12cwt.

HEAD COUNT 1274

Wow. Good prices and the demand for the lighter steers continues.

Used to, you could pick up aged cows or aged pairs cheap and make a $ on them. Harder and harder to do now.

Friend pulled calves off his cows early due to extreme drought in CA. Steer calves (about 300 head) averaged 270lbs. and brought $303/cwt., heifer calves (about 200 head) averaged 240lbs. and brought $283/cwt., country deal. Heard of a couple of smaller, but big enough to not be a fluke sets (85-200 head or so each) bringing $300/cwt. plus for the steer calves at California auction yards.

You guys are killing me with those prices. I sent two 600lb black heifers, got 1.28/cwt and 3 black bulls average 650 lbs, got 1.33/cwt. These were nice calves, too. Sold in Northern Pa.

That's bad, but the haul bill for running them over this would have probably ate up your extra profit :lol2:.

What factors drive prices higher for the midwest compared to the east? Just closer to feed lots?

Yep, closer to the major feeding areas of the country. I have the same problem out here in the Northwest. If you figure the cost of freight plus factor in higher animal health costs and mortality caused by the longer trip it will work out to the price difference.

I was looking at trucking mine to missouri but the 1600 mile round trip sure would take the fun out of it! Profit margin was about $1500 not counting fuel and expenses to get there so I'm guessing after food/lodging probably $1000 more for the trip over and back compared to selling them at my local barn.

The other thing is you better have a place to lay them over for a week or two. If you just unload them at the sale yard after a 800 mile trip they may not look their best. My partner and I have sent pot loads to South Dakota in the past. We did well on them but we did have a place to feed them for a week or two when they got there.

Sold 9 heifers yesterday and they averaged better than 900.00 a head. The smallest which was 350lbs. brought $2.36. Very happy with the price here, just wish I had a load a week. :D

Good point, didn't consider the shrink on the ride over. I'll probably just stick to my local barn(s). I've got 3 within 1.5hrs so I've got options.

A load of nice black steers weighing 820lbs brought 159.50cwt here last Thursday. I thought they might be around 162cwt, seemed a little cheap to me.

I sold some Hereford bulls that came on some cows i got about 4 months ago at 590lbs for 195cwt, after expences that only made the cows cost me 400$.
