I dont think thered be many jerseys left with all those hungry africans out there

I think that cape buffalo who have survived centuries of predation by the african lion could probably hang with the jersey bull in a fight for his females.

I am not sure how big a mature cape buffalo bull is as I have never seen a fully grown one. saw a young one once and he snorted and jumped at me and even though I was on the other side of a good fence he made me step back.
Never saw one in person but the Robert Ruark quote always comes to mind when people talk about their attitude, " A buffalo looks at you like you owe him money"[/quote]
know the look :cowboy:

So, do your breed of cattle get fat on oak leaves & brush? My highlands do

Can they graze 70% slopes? My highlands do

Do your cows calve unassisted? My highlands do.

I don't knock your breed. Don't knock mine, please.

Don't be so over-sensitive!! They are your cows, man, not your children. And as far as that 70% slope, does this answer your question?

I love that photo - the cows that graze ski slopes (and yes, that is what they do).

I've considered crossing my Tarentaise with water buffalo given local conditions here in the lowlands this fall, but I'd never cross with a Cape Buffalo because I owe enough money already.

I don't know squat about the breed, but from what I can tell they must be very thin skinned and sensitive animals.

I second the highland cattle. They may be a good breed but I went to a sale a couple of weeks ago and watched a few of them get the lowest price in the sale ($310). The trouble is feedlots don't want to buy them, there must be a market somewhere, probably direct to the slaughterhouse but they sound like a very expensive hobby. Lovely looking animals though!

i dont have much use for anything other than
brahmans and their derivatives (beefmaster, brangus, tigerstripes, etc)
the british breeds (angus, hereford, shorthorn)
and a few continentals ( charolais and simmental)

Sorry, the 70% slope has my mind stuck on that, so I feel the need for a :bs: I appears the cows in the pic are on a 45% slope or close to. That's 45 degrees from straight up and down, maybe a cow can do 20 degrees from straight down with some climbing gear.

There now my mind is not stuck, it's back to it's normal fuzzy and dazed.

Alan

You forgot the brush.

Thank you for explaining to me they are not my children. I was stressing on that just this morning.

There, are we done insulting each other now?

Actually % slope is measured by feet of rise over 100 ft. So, 70% would be 70ft of rise over 100 ft. It isn't measured in degrees.

I'm sure every breed has a niche or they wouldn't exist. I think we can all agree that some breeds work better in some areas than others. I mainly wanted to know if there were any breeds whose good qualities were basically redundant to other breeds and had qualities that would be undesirable to a commercial cattle operation.

Well that adds a whole new perspective on it..
What flavor ice cream do you not prefer with your toppings? ha

You run out of NITS to pick?

When I found this site I reminded my self to stay away from the breeds board. Thank you for reinforcing my first inclination, 3 way

You know how to put folks on ignore on this site?

Yes, there is a problem with highlands... one cannot JUST take them to the auction. There has to be some marketing involved.

It appears this is outside the box thinking for some here.

I know every board has an ignore feature. I just want to thank some of you for the motivation to help me find it on this board.
