You can't win unless ...

Help Support CattleToday:

Can't say I play the lottery all that much but I do love to play blackjack. But I'm a novice at the game and I never play in the high rollers room. Over the years I'm still on the up side of the winnings but every once in a while… well, you get the point. Losing the farm in a card game? That's just plain stupid and we all know you can't fix stupid.

People can get as addicted to gambling as alcohol. I was actually involved in a gambling ring in college. It was easy money, but I decided I was too pretty for jail.

I always believed that I should never risk anything that I cannot afford to lose. I guess that is why my gambling is limited to a couple of $2 lottery tickets a year.

I have spent more time than I care to admit playing Rook. I rarely loose a game, with that said I could not imagine betting a paycheck on a game, much less a farm.

I guess it was a situation of easy come easy go huh? That is sad however.

Rafter I'm with you. I'd rather play cards than eat. Don't get the chance to play anymore because I'm usually at home with the kids but when we did play, it was hard to lose much. .50/$1 ante and over the years we all pretty much broke even. Win one week and lose the next. It was about the fellowship. But betting not 1 farm, but 2? Awful decision. For the loser anyway.
Same here. Don't play much anymore, but I do like to play poker. You can learn a lot from playing the game.
Ex. Putin thinks like a poker player and he sure beats obummer every time.
You learn more from losing than you do from winning. Mostly, from losing, you learn how to win
There are some people that just insist on losing. They never learn.

How many of you would be comfortable taking those 2 farms? I'm not sure it would sit right with me. (What were the circumstances?).
If it was a friend or neighbor, I couldn't do it. Even if was a stranger, unless it was part of some organized "high rollers club" (where the loser wouldn't miss 2 farms!), I think at most I'd tell him to write me a check for a couple grand, an equal one to a worthy charity, and to go home to his family....(If I thought he had an actual gambling problem, I wouldn't do that, but would sure not play against him any more).

Friend of mine married a recovering gambler. Worries me but so far as I know hasn't stumbled...

I'm not completely against gambling. We play poker at the deer camp, but it's nickel ante and quarter limit. You'd really have to work at it to lose more than $20.00 in an evening. On the other hand, I don't play the lottery. I figure God loves me too much t let me win anyway because he knows how sorry and lazy I'd be if I didn't have to work for living.

That is what we play with a 20 dollar buy in limit,it is more of a social gathering
than anything else. Someone brings the snacks each week.

To start with I don't bet. Because I've seen men lose their boats, vehicles, and lots of money to gambling. I've even seen men shot, stabbed and killed because of gambling.
But in life there's winners and losers, and everyone doesn't get a trophy. The only thing a man has is his word, and if you don't keep your word your no kind of man..
Your friend is in real financial trouble, gamblers can't be trusted. And your friend needs to keep their finances separate where the gambler can't get access to the money.

I don't gamble and would never be in that situation. Everyday I see children go without because their parents throw their food money away trying to win the lotto. The government doesn't seem to mind fleecing these people with their promises of big winnings via their nonstop advertisements - which incidentally they promised not to do if the people voted to allow this type gambling in our state. His losing the farms, just like these hungry kids, are no one's fault but their own. It all boils down to freedom and with freedom comes responsibility. Just like this morning, I chose not to piss on the electric fence. Had I done this and got shocked it would be no one's fault but my own but hopefully I will have learned something from it. If not, God help me because no one on earth can.

Thanks for the reminder Hillbilly.....I hadn't thought about "Rook" in ages. One of the few things we had to play when I was pre-teen going to school in a two room bldg.

When I was in college, my wife and I went to a casino for a PBR. I had always wanted to play blackjack at a casino. Because it was Saturday, they only had their $15/hand tables open. In about 2 minutes I lost $30. With our tight budget, I had lost about a week's worth of groceries. That cured me. I'll play the lottery with a group at work when it gets up there, but that's it. It comes too hard to lose it so quickly.

If any of you find yourselves developing a gambling habit let me know and I'll send you to the casino with my wife. I promise that after an hour or two of listening to her throw a tantrum if she doesn't at least quadruple her money with every bet you'll be cured. I'm not much of a gambler anyway but I tried it twice and she sure cured me.

My gambling is limited to cows--which is a gamble indeed.
Regarding my friend, yes it is concerning. They have been together for many years now with (so far as I know) no issue but I understand that an addict (of any type) may always stumble, it is a lifelong thing they have to fight.
I hear what you're saying about the gambler who loses his farms needing to keep his word. But I'm addressing it from the other (winner's) side: if I think he has gambling problem, am I on morally okay ground, or am I on morally shaky ground, to actually follow through and take his farms? Does it matter if they are his livelihood and his family will suffer? Just food for thought, not sure what the answer is myself....

My great grandfather said there were three things he knew for sure that wouldn't work well. He said "You can't spend yourself out of debt, You can't drink yourself sober, and you can't pi$$ on an electric fence. I've tried all three." Not sure if the electric fence incident was an accident or not (I think it was) but he said he pi$$ed blood for three months. :bang:

Nope, I've done it too back in the bad ol days and I know I was sober--wouldn't have gone home otherwise..
Exactly.
I remember one night we were at a bar in Memphis, was just ready to walk out as there were almost no women there and that was the biggest reason to be out.
Anyway in walks a group of guys and we got to talking to them. Turns out they we're the Bama Band, they had done a little show in Millington that night without Hank Jr. and they came in for a drink afterwards.
Anyway between 5:30 and 6 that morning we all left there.
For sure drank till sober that night. They sure had some stories.
