You can't win unless ...

The lottery folks keep advertising you can't win unless you play. Know a guy who just won two nice farms in a poker game. Maybe I need to start playing poker cause I could have used them. Makes you wonder. But then again, I also know the guy who lost them and I'd hate to be in his shoes right now. Maybe I'll just stick with my no gambling policy.

Same here, I get tempted ever now and then to buy a lottery ticket or two, then I remember and stick to my no gambling policy.
Of course, a farmer friend of mine heard me say I didn't gamble, and he disagreed with me, he said you're a farmer ain't you, I replied yes, he then said, you gamble ever day. I still tell myself it ain't quite the same.

Using his logic you could say that about getting out the bed every morning. Don't think that's the same as betting the farm. Just blows my mind.

I'm not completely against gambling. We play poker at the deer camp, but it's nickel ante and quarter limit. You'd really have to work at it to lose more than $20.00 in an evening. On the other hand, I don't play the lottery. I figure God loves me too much t let me win anyway because he knows how sorry and lazy I'd be if I didn't have to work for living.

Rafter I'm with you. I'd rather play cards than eat. Don't get the chance to play anymore because I'm usually at home with the kids but when we did play, it was hard to lose much. .50/$1 ante and over the years we all pretty much broke even. Win one week and lose the next. It was about the fellowship. But betting not 1 farm, but 2? Awful decision. For the loser anyway.

There is a difference. Investing time, energy , capital and taking a chance on producing a product that will be sold in a market where you may come to the good and another person will use the product and may also come to the good is different than winner take all. With gambling, the only way to win is with the direct loss of another. That being said, I don't have a problem with people making the choice to gamble with fruits their labor.....or not to gamble.

Old man told me once... 1st generation accumulates, 2nd generation speculates, 3rd generation decimates. I've seen his (and your) theory played out many times sadly. I've always wondered had I inherited land, equipment, etc if I would have appreciated it, like I do having earned what little I have myself. I'd like to think I would have appreciated it, but I can't be sure.

Same here. Don't play much anymore, but I do like to play poker. You can learn a lot from playing the game.

I know what you are saying and have had the same thoughts. I think it was the adversity and the hard times that made me the way I am today. I hope I would take the ball and run with it but who knows. One of my children was talking to me one day and said "we are rich aren't we dad?" I told them, "No, YOU are poor as shyt so you best work hard in school and make something of yourself".

That's funny Joe. My youngest is 6. She told me not long ago when she wanted something... I said "I don't have any money". She said "just write a check". So I figured I'd explain how checks work. I'm not sure she fully understands but she has got a better idea now of how that process works. I think there should be some sort of mandatory "money management" course in high school. My daddy always said " You can break the Rockefeller's" meaning you can't spend more than you make or even spend everything you make.

You learn more from losing than you do from winning. Mostly, from losing, you learn how to win

I didn't make her do this for a long time but she was pretty industrious and had a bunch of money making ventures that really started adding up to some serious money. She didn't like this concept at all. For someone her age, she has quite a bit of money stashed away in different things and she earned every bit of it herself. I think she will be alright.

It may sound bad of me but if I were to die today none of my children will receive anything till they reach the age of 40 and hopefully be over fool's hill.

Its a family thing and goes back to my grandaddy. When my father died I was in my 40's and I was given some money. To this day I have never spent a dime of it on myself but I have used it to invest in my children's educations because I think investing in their minds is the best investment I can make for them. I just hope they pass the torch to their children in the same manner because its not about us its about the future generations.

My biggest goal in life now is to live till my kids are in their 30's. The boys anyway. They girl will be in her 40's if I make it.
Once they are over 30 they are getting pretty set in their ways. They do need some advice along the way.
As far as gambling we play the number game at lunch every day and it's the highlight of the day.
Someone writes a number between 0 and 500. Whoever gets the number either by guessing or having it "feed" to them buys lunch. The person on the right gets the tip.
It really evens out over time and doesn't cost any extra but you have to play every time. You can't loose then not play a while then play and loose.
