Help Support CattleToday:

All these photos has me giddy over waiting on our first calves due around the 20th of this month. Have 3 bred heifers among the first ones due to calve that will be the first daughters out of our herd bull who all are bred AI to a sire we are using for the first time so it just adds to the anticipation. Around here anything calving in January or February and even into March we always worry about what the weather will be because it can be extreme cold and snow or a big muddy mess on any given year.

Calves pens are not full yet but we are working on it. 76 calves in January.

With the calves in the barn, do you have any issues with scour outbreaks? What preventative steps do you take?

In the last 3 years we saw near 0 scour cases. The cows are on peat moss most of the time and wood chipping went it's too cold. We desinfect the barns each year. The cows are vaccines with scourgard prior calving. Cold barns must help also, today temp is near 0°F. We have more cases of scour with the small group of fall calving cows on pasture!

Thought I would post a few pics of calves. This is a 10-28 fall bull calf by Innocent Man (out of Clinicque, show winner last year)

This is a 1-3 heifer by Executive Order

Group of calves - red tags are heifers, yellow males

Same fall bull calf, Eightball with some January calves
