I have a really nice, I think, group of red angus heifers that I am considering AI'ing to a Polled Hereford bull and was looking for some recommendations for bulls that would do the job for me. I am not against keeping replacements from my first calvers if they are good enough so I guess I am looking for calving ease, growth and maternal - that shouldn't be too much to ask for, right ?
cheers Goddy

I like 294 and would certainly use him. But here are some other suggestions for you. I have a progress daughter I really like a lot.

Felton's Legend 242 is the old dependable calving ease polled Hereford bull, Progress (the bull I posted above) is his son.

I seem to be stuck on 242 sons but Revolution is another bull I really like.

I know you asked for polled bulls but there are some horned bulls I like a lot also one being 3027. Since you're covering red angus you shouldn't end up with any horns.

We used Lened for several years, wasn;t impressed with any of his daughters.

I will admit Dun, Legend was my least favorite of the three, but by far the best heifer bull I used. But I never kept any of his calves. Progress is by far the best cow producer I ever used, I have some Rib Eye cows I really like but their BW is a bit higher than I like. In full disclosure I'm not a big time cattle guy, in the years I was AIing I ran around 20 cows is all. I hauled a few culls to the sale a couple of years ago, couldn't quit smiling at the check and hauled most of the herd in the coming weeks. Now rebuilding with my best young cows and all live cover using BA Bulls.

We used Domino 774 a lot for a few years, then we went to legend and now R294. I got a helluva good buy on 774 semen some years ago, all gone now.

We also used KCF Bennet E153 for a couple of years. Real power cows and his steers were fantastic. Every one of his daughters prolapsed as 2nd or 3rd calvers.

When you're talking prolapses you're talking straight hereford cows... right?
Or is it something Goddy should worry about when selecting f1 hereford x RA replacements from his Red Angus cows?

Herefords used to be king around here decades past, But now you hardly see them and the ones you do see aren't that impressive. So if its a dock, or just poorer animals - they sell for less. Seems odd to me people want to breed towards them. But I guess people like a challenge?

That's the sad part, they were all F1s from black Angus or Red Angus or out of F1 GelbviehXRed Angus. Other than one straight Hereford (unknown lineage) that prolapsed as a first calver. And of course, she was the wifes pet! Except for her, all were sired by that E153 bull. He only lasted a couple of years as an AI bull. ABS destroyed all of his remaining semen.

HH Perfect Timing. Used his son on Brahman, Black Angus heifers, and Heinz 57 commercial cattle. For an ugly little dink of a bull we got above average growth and no calving problems at all.

Different people have different definitions of maternal. Where you are located has everything to do with how you look at it.

Straight Herefords don't sell the best, but many people like baldy calves, and baldy cows are above average mothers.

After many years of zero prolapes we had three this spring - - two angus and one hereford. So angus must be the problem breed!

As an all around and well-proven choice, I will put in another vote for Genex's "Revolution" bull.

George

Are you restricted to just AI stud bulls or would you buy semen shipped directly from a breeder? I'd recommend checking out Rausch Herefords bull lineup (which includes Revolution) if you aren't just limited to getting semen from an AI stud, they have several that probably would fit what you are looking for and they definately have been in the business a long time to be known as one of the better Hereford breeders in the country. Their Hyalite On Target 936 bull fits the description of what you are looking for I think. We've used a lot of Revolution over the years and have been pleased with what we got from using him but the calves we got out of 936 probably topped those, expecially in the growth and muscling for sure. We kept a son we bred from 936 and his first calves will hit the ground next year and we just love the thickness on him that we hope he passes down to his calves.

We just started using their York bull last year too but only had 1 calf by him from this calf crop so really don't have an opinion on him yet other than knowing his progeny has been popular on their recent production sales. We should have about a handful of York calves next year hopefully to get a better read on what kind of calves he sires. They have a few other bloodlines on their herd sire pages that I believe some of those bulls might be offered through some of the AI places like Revolution is with Genex.
