Angus/Red Angus Feet & Leg Improver

Help Support CattleToday:

Black Cedar 46P seems to consistently sire good feet and legs with excellent depth of heel.

Has anybody used TC Gridiron 258 Blk angus bull? Great bull for feet and legs. Hoover Angus still using him at 11 or 12 y/o.

DTA, Grid Maker is a good terminal bull, which is Gridiron's Sire. Another son of Grid Maker is TC Grid Topper 355.
Grid Maker has been responsible for some good cows and bulls.
He also has a couple of faults that he passes, and sometimes a cow will over ride it.
One, he is very high in the rear end, which makes his rump look as if he is standing downhill.
Second, he has very straight legs, which will be important to a breeding bull.
Grid Topper 355 inherited the very straight back legs and high rump is the reason they show a picture of him standing up hill. That hides a defect in a high rump or a swayed back. When a picture of a bull is taken in hay or high grass, and his lower legs and feet are covered, :stop: . That is a very important part of the bull, and the owner will want that strong part to shine since it is so difficult to find these days. The best thing to do is find a video. I am afraid of anything if I can't see it walk.
In TC Gridiron, he has inherited the straight back leg, not as extreme as Grid Maker, and also the high rump. They always show him standing up hill, yet, his rump still slopes upward. As a whole, cattle with a very high rump, have straight back legs.
Here is a site to show both Gridiron and Grid Topper standing in straw.

This is a picture of Gridiron as a younger bull and at his present age. Notice that they always show him standing up hill. He does have good lower legs and feet; and the owners do want to show that off as that is an added plus since it seems to be difficult to find these days.
I would say that his feet are good, but I would pass on his straight legs. He does have a great RE!!!

What Red Angus Bulls are the most popular? Sometimes people use a lot of a certain bull, but he may still have defects; I am not sure if a salesman pushes him on people that cannot see the bull walk, or people cannot see the fault. If I can't see a video of him walking, then I am fearful after seeing so many perfect standing bulls, then a mangled mess when they start moving.
I think the Red Angus cattle are really nice, and seem to be more full bodied than the Black Angus. I don't know of anyone around me that own any, so I am not familiar with any of the offspring.
Tell me some of the better know Red Angus bulls if you don't mind.

The Red Angus have a lot of straight legged bulls. I was surprised to see such a high percentage. I found a couple of different bulls, some with angles, but a little less than perfect. But no bull is going to be that.
Here is one that has a decent angle on his leg, but they are hiding his feet. That is not a good sign.

This bull has a good angle on his leg, after going though many many bulls and they are showing his feet.

This one has more of a bend in his leg, and appears to have good feet.

OK, this bull has a straighter back leg, and his rump will be higher than it shows in this picture as they have him standing as he is going up hill, but he is the old style bull that I like; a 1992 model.

Video's will tell the rest of the story.

The third bull is the only one that doesn;t have something else even more serious going against him. The one positive for the first bull is that his calves are the most vigorous calves at birth that I've ever seen. A lot of them are on their feet before the cow is back on hers.

Have you had trouble with the first two bulls? Pictures can hide so much. Just looking at all of the bulls, they are good looking bulls.
What about the Leachman bull? Have you ever used him before?

What have been the best Red Angus bulls you have used?

The only one we've used was cherokee canyon, the picture boy for horrible maternal calving ease. Gravity is his son so there is no way I would use him.
Basin Hobo 79E is an udder improver and we haven;t had any issues with his daughters feet, so for Jericho has done well for us Wein the past used mostly the older Red Angus genetics, but a couple of the bulls from canada show a lot of promise. Since wwe've cut down to around 2 dozen cows, about half of which are registered Red Angus we just don;t use the bulls like we used to. If I find a bull that works with out cows I tend to keep using him. All of the Red Angus go back to just one cow and all but one of the commercail cows go back to Granny
