    Massey Ferguson 283 Hydraulic Problem

How heavy is heavy? Tractor makes generally publish what a given model is equipped to lift. When hydraulic systems gets overloaded relief valves open.

    opinions massey 165 175

And they leak oil from every pore. The electrics are crap. But they are reliable, even if terribly crude. Operator comfort wasn't considered very long when the designers met.

Explain hydraulic gallons per minute to me...

Bigger pumps are worth more if you'll be powering lots of functions at once, e.g. a loader with a grapple.

I have a Milwaukee. It was a good purchase.

    Duals ?

You are defeating the money you spent on inside duals. Inflate the radials to 8-10 lbs, if you hang bias tires on the outside you just defeat the radials. Just my opinion. Inflate your tires any way you want.

What will you do with this tractor?

    Duals ?

A set of radial tires (single) will pull as well as any duals.

Tractor question - please give me some advice

4020's are classic, but there are a lot of rich old farmers who had a 4020 as their first tractor and they sell for crazy prices.

Liquid Fertilizer on Corn Planters ?

I never used liquid, but I always assumed the flow would be more uniform and more consistent than dry fert. Liquid is more expensive, for sure. Unless you put a high value on liquid starter I'm doubting the price is really worth it.

Any old timers close to Shelbyville, Indiana?

Probably 70 miles to Shelbyville for me. "Needlers" sort of rings a bell, but I never did business with them. Every town used to have more than one machinery dealer but they're mostly gone now. Mega dealers every hundred miles or so it seems. My town had JD, IH, Ford and, I think, Oliver...

A magazine called Farm Industry News used to answer a lot of questions like this. Google them and you might get lucky.

    New vs. Used (Part II)

Used prices are record high, because Ag has been in overdrive for several years. Plus, the price of new ones supports the price of used. This won't last forever, so don't place a bet that new will always be worth more and more. Look at what your per hour cost of use will be and whether that...

    4wd tractor for haying

You have two ? and you need to seperate them, I think. If selling a tractor would improve your financial position I would say sell. Buy another cow, etc. Farmers love tractors and tend to get "machinery poor". I know a dealer who will rent me a tractor anytime, so that makes a difference...

Larry, I've never met a woman who knew the meaning of "Coast". On the gas or on the brakes. Yep.

    MF 240 or Kubota L4330???

I swear CB had a post here praising the Perkins engine in the Massey. I 2nd that, great reliable engines. I have some concerns about the front end of the 240 being heavy enough for a loader. If you are moving hay in the mud, I'd take the 4wd.

Checking transmission oil in a IH 966

Possibly, this tractor has a plug in the transmission for checking oil levels. Pull the plug, add oil until it runs out the hole and replace the plug. That's how a lot of older tractors did it--not sure about the IH 966.
