Anyone familiar with Kwik-Way cattle chutes?

My darling husband just picked one up with hopes of freeing up the mechanisms. A little bit of spray and elbow grease and all parts seem to be working like a champ. Just wondering if there is anything we should know or be aware of or be looking for. The sides of the chute are pipes, 5 on...

Should I be concerned about this cow? Should I do something?

Had a cow calf last night. She's new to us, so I don't really know her calving history or her mothering skills. We don't run them into the barn, although if need be, we could put her in the barn if we run her through the chute and into the trailer. She went about cleaning him off, but didn't...

Can a cow 'withdraw' her water bag??

Stupid question alert ... I know a water bag when I see it, I really do. I was tending to a calf that was abandoned by his mother and noticed that a water bag was showing on another cow. After giving 'Shishkabob' his bottle, I went to check on the cow -- very excited to witness yet another...

It's only taken 7+ years, but I've finally caught a birth

I know, it's totally corny! But I'm just on cloud 9 that after all this time, I finally was able to catch a birth from water bag to calf. :D My husband thinks I'm crazy, but oh well. We had two in the barn, separated out for butchering - that's why we bought them, to turn them around...

Can it be true? A 10 month old bull breeding?

Hi. :tiphat: I'm really just putting this out there for the more experienced. We are a small farm - likely considered a hobby farm. We bought heifers and 2 -10 month old bulls in August from a neighbor getting out of cattle. I asked if there was the possibility of anyone being bred. He...

Hmm, noticed something weird with the bull

Was out watching the herd, as I like to do in the evening - kind of my wind down, and I noticed that the bull was not swishing his tail at flies like all the others. Matter of fact he was barely moving it at all. And then he pooped and as I watched, he didn't lift his tail to poo. So now I'm...

    Foolin' around, flies or founder???

I know the first recommendation is Call Your Vet.....but there are no vets that will come to where I am for cattle. That being said, we pretty much fend for ourselves through books, hands on learning and you fine folks. Over the past week, I've had three head (one steer, one heifer and our...

Has anyone ever tranquilized a cow for anything?

If so, what did you use? Husband and I were discussing having something on hand if we needed to tranq. for any reason so I figured I'd throw the question out to the floor.

Talk about jumping in with both feet and a blindfold!!!

For those of you that have taken the time to answer my questions, you know that we are small time compared to.....well, anyone. Well, a friend of a friend has two cows that he HAS to get rid of. The pasture he kept them at was sold and he needs to get rid of them YESTERDAY. They are both...

Those 'Real California Cheese' commercials just crack me up!

They just aired a new one with two dairy cows laying on the barn floor with a Rooster walking around them crowing. I didn't catch the whole commercial, but the end was one cow telling the other to 'hit the snooze' and then the rooster goes flying out the barn door and into a mailbox!! I rarely...

Well, we will be posting him tomorrow!

I'm sorry to say that my poor BS died today. I called a vet friend of mine to see if she could post him for me. I'm not kidding when I say that we do not have a cattle vet in our area. We're not going to do tissue samples (I don't think) I just want to see if maybe all that rough housing the...

    How long is too long??

My brown swiss got knocked out of top slot about 3 days ago. (thread in the beginners section) He's been extremely mopey, he doesn't come to eat, etc. I can't say that he's not eating, because I don't stand there 24/7, and I'm sure that he must be getting some hay, and grazing. Yesterday, I...

Question> Once a cow has been knocked down a few pegs....

by another cow, could he get very complacent? Depressed? Here's the scenario: 16 month old brown swiss is in pasture with 11 month old polled hereford bull and 11 month old black baldy steer. BS towers over both of them in height, length and width and is always rough housing with the bull/...

Not sure where this goes->Question about having 2 bulls.

The guy that owns the cows we just bought the yearling heifers/bull from runs two bulls together. He claims he wouldn't do it any other way because when he needs to go in the pasture, they are to preoccupied with each other to be concerned with him. Does anyone have any experience with...

    Percentage of Protein for feed??

I tried a search and must not have keyed in the right words. Can someone tell me how much protein (ballpark of course) should be in beef cattle feed? Or if this has been beat to death already, some key words for a search. Thanks much.

Going to look at some Hereford's tomorrow

We are new to raising cattle, and are doing it mainly for our own consumption along with selling maybe one or two. DH normally comes home with something from the auction, and then I bust my hump to try to save it. Mostly with not much luck. Tomorrow we are going to a farm to have a look and...

Once upon a time, someone posted an article about manure

and how it 'piled up' and what those piles would possibly tell you about what was missing in the diet. Does this ring a bell with anyone at all??? I would love to find that article again, if anyone has an inkling of an idea.

Can a cow with pneumonia be saved?

Is there any reason to keep those metal ear tags?

It seems crazy to me to put those metal ear tags in a calfs ears just so that as the ear grows, the ear ultimately grows around them and gets infected and nasty. We've always cut them off the day they come home. Is there any reason to keep them on if we are not selling the calves/cows? And...

    Best advice for creep feeding

I've moved my calf bull into the field with the other two cows (female Hereford just over a year old and steered Brown Swiss about 7 months old) I'm weaning him off milk replacer and upping his grain. But if I walk away the two older ones push him out of the way to eat his grain. Any...
