    Feral Hogs (long post)

I just got back from a ferel hog hunt. Didn't need any type of license or permit, just the land owners permission. No limit or restriction on method of hunting. You can pretty much kill them as the opportunity arises. You can't break the law to do it though. You can't stop on the highway...

    who is a rancher

I consider myself a rancher despite the fact that at the moment I have less than 10 heads of cattle. For me, they aren't pets, they're my business. My grandfather managed a dairy farm and considered himself a farmer. Go figure.

Nice place you have. It looks very peaceful. Thanks for sharing.

    Water Buffalos

If my cattle acted like that, I'd never be able to get anything done. Those are some tough animals!

    sale barn calves

If these are a sample of what runs through your sales barn, I'm jealous. We get a mixed bunch and finds like that are rare. Nice calves. I like them.

Best cross breed with an angus

I have an Angus cow that was bred to a Beefmaster. I don't know what the calf will look like, but the little guy/gal is due any time now according to the vet. I'll post some pics as soon as it arrives.

    Ceramic Knives

My girlfriend is a chef and she has a set. Those things (the real ceramic knives) are expensive!! But yeah, they are great. They tend to be super sharp and hardly ever dull. The set she has has been put through two years of school and another 3 of work. The only down side, if any, is that...

    Wasp stings.

I don't know if this works after the fact, but my granfather used to crush a baby asprin (I suppose a regular asprin might work just as well) add a few drops of water to turn it into a paste and then apply it to the sting area. It's worked for me in the past. I was just stung a few weeks ago...

    calf pics

Thanks for the information. I'm in the process of trying to upgrade my pastures and am trying to find a good mix that works here in central Texas.

    New Calf Arrival

I'm not exactly brand new here, but I am definitely still in the learning stages. Here's my situation. I have a cow that, according to the vet, is going to give birth in the next week or two. With all the rain that we've gotten, and that is still expected, here in central Texas, I haven't...

    calf pics

SJR725, What kind of grass do you have on your place. It looks really good in the pic with the closeup of the cows.

    What happened here? Pic

The calf looks as though my bull got to her mama, but seeing that you're in TN not TX, I guess I can't offer any help. I like the calf though.

Mongoose, The cheapest I found for just the headgate was at Tractor Supply. I think it was about $550. I'd love to know where you found one for $250?

How to become an Embryologist??? HELP

Showgirl, I wondered the same thing myself. I simply wanted to learn how to palpate, AI, and ET. Since you're in Texas I would recommend starting with your local ag extension. Then you can check this site to see if it helps. http://www.agtechinc.com/index.cfm I know there was a training...

    Those pesky "noise complaints"...

I lived in San Antonio for almost 6 years. For the first year and a half I lived in between Lackland AFB and Kelly AFB. I loved the planes. People in my neighborhood used to complain all the time and in some cases, they had every right. Some of them failed to realize that the homes we were...

    Rustlers

Earl, Sorry to hear about your problem. You'd think that neighbors would be more considerate? I've got good neighbors, but even if they tried taking my cattle one they are branded and secondly one of them is raising Chars and the other some type of Brahman cross. Neither look like mine...

    Repairing Barb Wire

When I bought my place the owner's family had been ranching on it for over 125 years. Needless to say it had been replaced or repaired several times. My point is that even some of the newer wire was about 30-40 years old and still good. I just repair what I can, but like several people...

    Homemade Chute

OK Guys. Here's the best I could do. Please forgive me for my cattle drawing. Here are a few things to remember. The size wood that I used was because that's what I had laying around. For my posts, I used 6"x6"x10'. I buried them 3' below ground leaving me with a 7' exposure above ground...
