    Is it OK?

I've got a friend that has a couple cows and a horse, the other day I went by his house and his cows were gathered around a bale of sudan hay and his horse was right in there too. I've heard sudan is not good for horses and I told him that but for the life of me I couldn't remember why.

Well its been a while since I've had a chance to get on here and check out whats been going on but the last couple of days I've tried to sift through some of what I've missed and I guess it looks like everything is pretty much the same. Someone PM me if I missed something really good. OK...

    Fence line weaning

has been discussed and that is currently what I am doing and so far everything has been fine. Now the lot I have them in is running short on grass.... ok actually there is no grass left. My question is what will happen if I section off a part of my pasture with an electric fence...

Well it looks like I'll spend less time here.......

in the future, :( but I'm DEFINITELY not leaving for good. :) My current job is mainly at a desk with about 30% outside work(surveying/job inspection/construction management), thus I am able to spend alot of time here reading and learning. I had an interview for a full time surveying position...

    In 5 years

what will the cattle industry be like? More black cattle? A new "best breed"? Small producers getting out? More hobbiest? Just kind of slow today so I thouhgt I'd get some opinions on where we're heading in the near future. All opinions, ok, maybe most opinions, are...

    Overweight mare?

I might have posted this question before but I'll ask it again. I have a mare that is a very easy keeper. In fact she is overweight prety bad. She is on pasture grass only. I plan on the next few weeks and months to get her back into riding shape and start using her again. I know starting and...

    Bred cow??

Ok here's the deal I have a cow, that has a calf at her side. I believe this calf was born 3/18/06, a heifer, but I'll need to check my records to be absolutely sure on the date but I am pretty sure about the month. Anyways the cow is just a cross that I picked up at the sale one day. 45 days...

    Weaning!

I posted this question about cattle so I'll ask it about horses too. How long should you keep the mare and colt separated before allowing them back together in the same pasture?
  11. J

    How long?

It's always talked about what age you should wean your calves but I seldom hear any discussion over how long you should keep them away from their mamas. Just wondering what the thoughts were.................... :D
  12. J

    When do you like.....

to wean your colts? With cattle it seems to be about the same for everybody. I was just wondering what your thoughts were on horses. :D

Taking weight off mare after foal?

I have a mare that foaled back in March. She has always been an extremely easy keeper and I was just wondering when I should start working her to pull some weight off of her? I know I have to start out slow. It just seems like towards the end of pregnacy she got real big but after the colt she...

    Let it slide?

What should we do about those few that ruin this board for others? Mainly talking down to and belittling others because someone isn't as much of a "cattleman" as they claim to be. I don't think we should sugarcoat answers and in certain situations you have to be extra stern but in most cases...

    What do you think??

Ok I have a few areas in my pasture that need some work. For the most part (well maybe half) I've got pretty good coastal. But there are bare spots throughout and I also have cactus, mainly in those bare areas. My plan of attack is to take a skid steer and go thru and remove as much cactus as...

    Lessons from a Donkey.......

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to...

    New mare w/ colt?

I picked up a mare w/ about a month old colt the other day. I 'm not sure when she was wormed last, but I was told it's been 6 months or better. Should I just worm her now or wait for the colt to grow some? Will it hurt him to do it now? The mare is healthy. She eats good, not under weight, has...
