    Financial Thresholds

Well now, I was willing to talk to you and help you until you had to go and throw out that 4 handicap business!! Now you're on your own! Bullred (24 handicap) ;-)

    TIGER STRIPE CATTLE

Frankie, I would think that very few people are misled into thinking that Nolan Ryan personally owns every cow that's labled Nolan Ryan Tender Aged Beef. No more so than people believe that Bum Phillips, Earl Campbell, or Jimmy Dean own every pig that's used to make their bacon or sausage...

    Financial Thresholds

Very well said, JK. Razorback, I would only add that even though it is very hard to maintain a positive cash flow with a small operation (primarily because of the reasons JK listed above) that doesn't mean you shouldn't operate it as a business. In fact, if you are planning on taking advantage...

    TIGER STRIPE CATTLE

Hey fellas! At the end of the day the bottom line is the "the bottom line." Now here's a quote from the most recent cow/calf weekly. "King also found the $4.60/cwt. advantage for primarily Angus calves over those with some Brahman influence ("ear") in 2001 increased to $6.77/cwt. in 2004."...

    Cattle Wormer's

I just wormed last week with the dectomax injectable. I got it off ebay, and paid $147 per 500 ml bottle. I found it cheaper there than either valleyvet or jeffers.

    avg post partum interval pic

It's a very good thing. Anytime you can improve on one calf per year your money ahead. Good looking stock also.

Letter From A Farm Kid - Who Joined Marines.

Lakading, You need to chill out a little bit! This joke has been around for a while. The point is to illustrate how tough country folks are. That’s done by giving the reader insight into their take on something that most people understand is very grueling (i.e. Marine Corps boot camp). The...

    Texans Alamo

Yeah, you should put it on a different thread, so as not to associate or tarnish the image of the Tejanos that fought and died for Texas independence with people you would "shoot" for crossing a border without proper documentation in order to feed their families! And speaking as someone whose...

    How soon?

I agree with Cypress. You should seperate them sometime soon. With Brahma influence cattle (which mature later) we seperate them from any bulls from weaning (6-7 mos) until first breeding at 15 mos. We probably could wait longer, but weaning time is the most convenient time to get it done.

    60 day breeding cycle

The objective is to get them out of the breeding pool. Some choose to do it immediately. Others will fatten and sale, or breed and sale, etc. Those are business decisions related to an individuals cost/day/cow. For a simplistic example, if your cost to carry a cow is $1.00/day (which is...

    Houston Livestock Show

Actually, Countryboy, without the business men that pay 300,000 or more for a steer, and the ones that donate tens of thousands for sponsorships, and the ones that volunteer their time and recruit other volunteers there wouldn't be a show. Speaking as a long time committee member, and business...

    Gooseneck adjustment???

Sounds like experience speaking there Caustic?? I also learned the hard way that not lowering the tailgate before driving out from under that gooseneck will cause a heck of a racket!! Now I've got a case of OCD when it comes to double checking that tailgate.

Do you like Tractor Supply Co ?

I know it's not the case with you guys, but I'll tell you I personally know a lot of people that cry about the failure of the mom and pops, and yet they are the first ones that run to TSC or Walmart to save a nickle. I pay almost a dollar a bag more for range cubes from a locally owned feed...

Summer plans (not necessarily cattle related)

Sawgum, I'd bring a bag of Pilgrim Texas Rancher cubes for them cows of yours but then they'd be trying to follow me all the way back to Chambers County! I appreciate the advice from others about watching out for farmers on the roads, but Barbers Hill, Texas ain't exactly a booming metropolis...
