What a market!

Help Support CattleToday:

The fescue answer would not apply here. In sw Missouri, the cattle are on fescue as either pasture or hay 365 days per year. There is not a day that my calves do not get all the fescue they can eat and their mothers, also. SW Missouri is where the sale results were that Denver posted, so fescue does not adversely affect prices, here. About the only other feeds that my cattle know exist are hop clover, wild lespedeza, and some johnsongrass, until they graze it out.

I think it takes a long hot summer and natural mineral shortages to cause big problems.

You can supplement some feed and get rid of alot of the fescue problems with calves. Also a shot of multimin at processing does wonders.

Now how in the world does anybody expect to raise cattle in the south and not have them eating fescue? It's everywhere.

Or, perhaps, what howdyjabo is talking about would be to pull them off the fescue for a while and put them on feed and a non-fescue hay.

Wonder what the market will do now. The grain report said that we are magically missing a bunch of corn, and stocks might be tight till spring. Of course 20 miles north of here you can find a pile the size of the Rhoda Island, but stocks are tight.

ditto on the copper- and southern calf reputation.
Its from the Fescue/Heat
Just make sure the calves you buy have been backgrounded and not fed much fescue, that solves all the issues.

I always thought it was transportation costs. Didn't figure anything about fescue issues. Kenny Thomas would know the answer.

I wont say the fescue doesnt hurt but I have never had anyone mention it. What i hear is how well the calves from here do once off the fescue and onto the midwest grass. Sure don't want cattle from the west that have not been on fescue to come here. Some like 3waycross have already found that out the hard way. The transportation costs are 10-12 cents but sickness is a big issue. Imagine sending calves from VA into Nebraska early this week.

It's not the fescue, or any mineral deficiency. Both of those are over come pretty easy. Hauling obviously figures in it. Cattle aren't going to walk across the Mississippi River.

Today they gained some more ground, 4wts are the big earners, they toped out at 2.51cwt, 1000$ for a 400lb calf is pretty unbelievable to me. 5wts only whent up to about 2.15cwt.

So this post inspired me. Dumped 5 char sired calves today. Meridian, TX sale.

460 lb @ $2.09 Steer
500 lb @ $2.00 Steer
605 lb @ 1.69 Steer

Historically I have done better in the March time frame. Prices this good in January has really gotten my hopes up.

Synced some black cows, used AI Herf, and got almost all males. Sold the 693# steers for $1.76 today. How does that pencil out for a feed lot?

Well, on your side, a fat steer, even a small one, is worth about $1800. At your weight, your over half way there. It's when 300lbers sell for $800, that I get confused.

Wish I had your luck.
