tractor rpm for disc mower

Help Support CattleToday:

If your mower is a 540 or 1000 pto input, go to your tractor operators manual it will tell you the rpms to run your tractor. Mine is 2205 rpms for the 540 input shaft speed and 2210 rpms for the 1000 input shaft speed. The mower will perform at its best at or close to this rpms.

run your rpms at 1800 to 2100.that will make your cutter fast enough.i know a few old boys that would cut hay in 8th gear with the tractor wide open.but they was in a smooth hayfield.

As hill rancher suggested check your tractors owners manual for the correct engine rpm's. The 7020 AC that run our disc mowers are rated at 2300 rpm's. Every tractor will be different depending upon the gearing from the motor back to the pto. Owners manual will be your best advice.

what kind of grass your cutting will determine ur speed
It will determine the ground speed but the engine rpm speed should still remain as close to rated as possible.

There are situations that you do want to run your PTO speed at less than 540. If you have a light crop you will need to increase you ground speed and decrease your RPM's. Disc mowers create mega air turbulence and in a light crop may blow the crop away from the knives yielding an uneven cut.
