I know it is a bit frustrating. I can't explain it except the long cold winters and the high price of hay. For awhile it seemed a lot of dairymen were quitting milking and feeding out silos of silage to beefers. But I guess with good milk prices a lot are staying in. This is the exact reason I went to direct marketing of grass fed. If I could get 2 bucks on 500 pounders, it would make the economics of direct marketing be a waste of time.

What factors drive prices higher for the midwest compared to the east? Just closer to feed lots?
Folks in the south east traditionally wean on the way to the sale. It takes a while and some effort to get the calves back to growing. Mortality is also higher.
Weaned, cut and vaccinated calves are bringing a premium to the other calves now. At least at our local sales. Our last bunch brought $90 per head more than those with no work done.

$3.00 is getting close around here. 200-249 bull sold for $2.77 at Athens yesterday.
There was some at 285lbs bring 2.79 at a sale here yesterday. 4wts up to 2.52, 5wts up to 2.27.

Top quality 285lbs. steers have been bringing over $3 for the last 30 days here.

Today I sold some Charolais X steers at 500lbs for 2.18$ 420lb black and bwf heifers for 2.05$ and some 390lb gray steers for 2.40$. Wasn't none of them very fancy calves so I was happy with the average per head total.

There was also some 5wt heifers bring over 2.00$ and 6wt steers up to 2.11$ yesterday. The 6wts that were that high was the nicest set of calves I've ever seen, mixed but all in perfect condition to buy and ready to take off.

Our local pool is loading a pot in the morning. 8 wt steers picked up here... $154.
Makes the load bring us $77000. I had bought some of these as 6 wt cutting bulls (last fall) for $110.

What are 6wt bulls bring there now? About 1.70$ and up here.

Denver, 6wt bulls could probably be bought for $1.50 right now. Maybe higher if they are not bull headed or don't show much age.
Well, I guess you can still buy calves to feed then.

slick the prices are a tad soft at emory.at our local barn cull cows are .80 to $1.15 bulls are .90 to $1.25 an thats at or barn less than 20mi from emory.an if you didnt know the uys that own both barns are brother in laws.the family has 4 barns between them.
