Neighbor bought some 7-9 year old black simme cows a few months back. These are bigger frame cows that are heavy with calf. In the past month he has had two cows go down & could not get up. One cow was out in a stock field for a few days untill he managed to get the long tines under under her & got in the barn, couple days later she was back on her feet. He now has had another go down in the same manner acting like her back legs are dead, after being down a few days she has gotten back up. I am thinking they might be getting a nerve pinched from the calf moving around. Any other ideas on this? Thanks

Could be. But then it could be icy conditions. Something else riding them. Pinched nerves typicaly happen during calving. Make sure they dont give any steroids to the bred ones.

milk fever?? does he know much about the background of these cows?

it sounds like the cows are carring big calves.an the calves are moving an getting on the nerves.thus making the cow stay down until the calf moves off the nerves.id watch all the cows very closely.once they calve everything should be ok.
