I want to run some corn stalks with the leaves and shucks ( corn cobs removed ) on them thru a chipper shreader. I want to use this ground up fodder for feed to my few head of cattle. Is this wise? I'm guessing there might be a problem with sharp pieces, etc that might damage a gut or something. I want to grind up the stalks to utilize the whole plant since the cows only like to eat the leaves. Many graze corn fields with standing stalks after the combine has stripped the corn. After a few months the field is picked clean. Cows love corn stalks, and they have teeth. If you chip the stalks, cows will still chew them. Calves are more suceptible to a punctured gut than cows are.
