Breeding Question

A friend from church wants to bring his cow over for our bull to breed. I'm not charging him and want to help.

What vaccines do I need to make sure his cow has before she visits? I don't want to put my cattle at risk of getting sick or worse...

Any suggestions or thoughts?

Do you know if he vaccinates with anything? Giving a shot at the last minute really won't do much, I don't think. Guess I'm not sure how to answer that one.
Any cattle that are bred naturally (including bull) should get Vibrio shot. My herd is vaccinated for most everything.

My cattle get Vira Shield 6+VL5 HB+Somnus for their pre-breeding, plus Cavalry 9 and an autogenous pinkeye.

What do you give your cattle? Really, I would suggest you consult with your vet because geography matters: do you really need HB or pinkeye, etc.? Wormed?

I use BoviShield 5VL5+HB - basically same as TC. Be sure cow is dewormed/deliced. Good point.

What do you vaccinate yours for? Should be about the same, agree on the vibrio... We use Triangle 10 HB... calgary 9... and a vibrio vaccine

Getting that cow vaccinated now would be more to protect her from getting something from you bull, or you cows. If yours are vaccinated for whatever is a problem in your area (I presume North Carolina) then your bull should be protected. But, is there a pasture or lot you could put just her and your bull in?

Trichomoniasis ("trich") might be a concern. Bull can become infected by breeding an infected cow. Then the bull infects other cows he breeds. Abortions and low fertility in the herd are the results. Read about it and maybe discuss with the vet. Here is some information from university of tennessee.

Where are you getting this with the HB option? All I can find is the straight 5VL5.

You should be able to get thru Valley Vet??
