I have a cow that has a large volume of fluid? or something extending from her midline on her belly to the left this extends to her udder It almost seems she has ruptured. She is acting normal nursing ,grazing, keeping up with the herd. From the rear you can tell that she is out of balance and her left side is a little lower than the right. Any Thoughts?

Oh No. Here is my story. Happened this last spring

Most veterinarians have not even seen a hydrops cow, but there is a treatment and that is draining the fluid. I have seen pictures online mainly from UK sites where the vet inserts a fine trocar and allows the fluid to slowly drain away into a bucket that is continually dumped. It must be done slowly to prevent shock to the cow. I would suggest phoning around to see if you can find a vet who knows what they are doing. My vets had a couple decades experience yet were clueless about what to do in my case. Good luck and keep us updated please.

bward -- your cow was the one I was thinking of. ;-)

Inducing labor is another possible treatment for a hydrops cow.

davez -- you said she's "nursing" -- so would I be right in assuming she's not bred and not fresh? if she is heavy bred (7 months+) then hydrops would be a concern, otherwise there may be something else going on. Have a picture?
