ATV

Help Support CattleToday:

I think in Wyoming it is considered a motor vehicle and sales tax is due when title is transferred at county clerk's office. Now if the buggy will never leave the place and be run til it dies, who needs a title or to pay sales tax? However, with a loan on it, the bank is going to want to hold the title, so I predict you will have to pay sales tax.

I remember buying our ATV, a 90s Yamaha Big Bear, five years back. I thought it was such a luxury to spend 1700 when I could walk or use the pickup. It's been some of the best investments, we use it all of the time.

Side by sides are crazy expensive, but I've never owned one. One neighbor has a John Deere and he hates it, the other has a Kubota and she loves it so much the husband never drives it. So who knows I might appreciate one of I bought it. Certainly I wouldn't miss the getting wet in the tall grass.

Any thoughts on the Roxor?

roxor is too big and you have a stick shift.. .

can am defender is the SXS to get IMO. or a kawi mule. best bang for the buck. can get them nice for 11 - 15k all day.

That is why I bought a ATV, just didn't want to spend that much. I would have liked to have a side by side, it would make it easier for dad to go out with me. Maybe one day. There was a Polaris Ranger single cab with hard doors, and probably had heat and A/C that had the price in the window, and that was $32,000. That is a little rich for my blood.

There's a guy selling a 2023 CFMoto with a cab and 87 miles on it on it in Gunnison Utah for 10K.

I have seen a few of those listed, and from what I understand they are Chinese junk. There is a dealer in Lander that used to sell and service them, but he had problems getting parts. He will no longer work on them. There are stories on the net about some that blew the motor with very few hours.

Yeah, I think their reputation hurt them in the first years... and from what I hear they are much better now. But I don't know for certain... just what I've heard.

I don't think they are junk. I have recently bought a very basic Mule and retired my CFMoto, I think they are well built just a bit too complex for where I go with mine and I had problems with sticks and branches jumping up and tearing into it and I'm hoping the Mule will be a lot tougher in those conditions. I did get a lot of work out of the CFMoto though and it will still be OK after I do some much overdue maintenance work on it. I know @Silver rates his CFMoto highly.

Yes, I have about 12,000 km's on my UForce 1000. I have put zero dollars into it other than oil changes to this point. I do not treat it nicely either. My neighbours have Polaris Rangers and they have not stood up as well as mine has. I do know the clutch in mine is Canadian made (brand name escapes me, maybe CVTech). A solid, well built machine for sure.

Dad can't run that new ATV. It's just different enough that can't do it. I was going to sell the old one, but maybe I should just fix it up. Although I'm also not sure I want him helping with bringing the cows home from the ranch this next fall. Last year he kind of got lost out in the pasture; he has rode it more than I have. Nine sections is a lot of territory to search if he gets lost. He's just not as cognitive as he used to be. I don't like him driving on the highway, he is going to hurt himself or someone else. His driving scares the begeebers out of me.

Sucks watching your dad slowly go from boss man to almost like a little kid where you have to watch and worry for them. My dad was really smart and active, now he can't remember how to put food on his plate. Maybe a neighbor would let you borrow a sxs once in a while just so you can take your dad with to 'help' gather cattle? I remember talking to an old guy at church who thought it eas great we had helping us; he sounded so sad when he said they didn't let him do much at their farm because they were worried about him getting hurt.

Tracking collar on the ATV or in a back pack.

I'd rather die doing something I love than live an extra year sitting on my ass and hobbled by kids that are keeping me alive so they can feel better about themselves.

My Mom had an aneurysm, she wasn't supposed to do heavy lifting, or any strenuous activities etc. The most fun I remember she had one day was when she ran to head off a small calf, she tripped and fell. She got up with a bit of manure in her clothes, but was laughing and said "I scared that poor little calf half to death".
We are protective of our parents, don't want them injured etc. But my Mom would have rather died trying to head off a calf than being confined somewhere.

Dad does not get around all that well. We have him going to physical therapy three times a week, and it is helping some, but it is slow going. Took him to Billings on Thursday to see a new RA doctor. His appointment was at 1pm, we left early as I wanted to pick up some fence post at Western Livestock supply before his appointment. We get there and they say we are three hours early, it was rescheduled for Four. It turns out that they called dads number and sometimes he has trouble answering his phone, and has no clue how to check his voicemail. So we monkeyed around in Billings for three hours. By the time we got home it was late. Sometime this week we need to get some blood test done and some ex-rays. The new doctor is not so sure he has RA, but it may be some other form of arthritis. It is hard seeing him decline, but I guess that is what happens when you reach 88 and beyond.

If it is RA, be thankful it's not started until later in his life. My dad got it when he was in his early 50s. He's now 77. He's been a patient of the best rheumatologist in the southeast for many years and had every medication possible. They finally told him about 2 years ago that he was "end stage RA" and nothing further can be done. Couple that with dementia and we've got our hands full. He's been on hospice for a while now and is wheelchair bound, but he's still chugging along. Even though dementia runs in my family, I truly think all the medication, especially the constant pain meds (opioids + morphine) has sped up his mental decline.
