I'm in the blackland area with higly alkaline soil. Everything I planted last fall(rye, ryegrass, wheat, fescue and crimson clover) did very well this spring except the crimson clover. Any of you fellers on the black clay have experience with another type of clover that works?

According to the attached link, crimson clover is best adapted to sandy loam soils.

That's the problem...iron chlorosis due to high alkalinity. I had a seed supplier suggest they mix the crimson with ryegrass and I said o.k. I usually research any new forage but this time I didn't do my homework. Thanks guys, I'll probably go with a red or button next year.

The Ladino clovers work good in the black soil here, along with some Persian and Ball clovers.

Vetch does pretty good in it too.
