I've just been to the Brisbane Ekka and watched the beef cattle judging. Before I post a ton of pics lets play a quick activity to determine breed character. There are 8 pictures of different breeds here. The breeds in the pics are Devon, Gelbvieh, Limo, Red Angus, Red poll, Senepol, Shorthorn and South Devon. See if you can determine which is which?

Some should be easier to pick than others. I've probably made it a little trickier with the variety of ages of the females.

O.K.
I'll be first to play your game of...let's make a fool of me.

1 Red Angus
2 Red Poll
3 Gelbvieh
4 Devon
5 South Devon
6 Limo
7 Shorthorn
8 Senepal

I'll try my hand:
1. Devon
2. Gelbvieh
3. Limousin
4. Red Angus
5. Red Poll
6. South Devon
7. Shorthorn
8. Senepol

Well done Son of Butch and BC for getting things started. You both had 3 out of 8 correct. I guess its true that there is more variation within breeds than between breeds. A lot of those females are very similar.

#2 looks more Gelbvieh than the rest but I don't like her.

#6 can come to my place any day.

-5 sucks.... 4 wrong is understandable but -5... is really bad
but since you tried to put a positive spin on it....
Can I expect a participation ribbon? :dunce:

they need to add a kicking the dog figure to go with my dunce cap

O.K.
I did some cheating and looked up Devon and South Devon online.
Devons are nick named Ruby Reds
so #5 is a Devon?

And it's the South Devons that are nick named "Orange Elephants."
#2 is no elephant...but she is kind of orange...
does that mean #1 is a South Devon?
but the animal behind her wearing the ribbon is a deeper red than her...so maybe not... :?

Ok, I'll make a fool of myself.
1. Shorthorn
2. South Devon
3. Gelbvieh
4. Red Angus
5. Red Poll
6. Limo
7. Devon
8. Senepol

Red poll and Devon are similar with both having a cherry red coat but generally Devon have a bit more bone and muscle. From what I've seen anyway

At first I picked #1 as the red angus. Then I noticed the little bit of black around the mouth on #4 and switched. I will pm you my address and you can send the prize in the mail. LOL! I guess I got lucky.

I would bet money the Limi is a purebred and not a fullblood .

I don't have the details to confirm that but I agree she didn't look traditional french.

I'll bite!

#1 Red Angus
#2 Gelbvieh
#3 South Devon
#4 Shorthorn
#5 Red Poll
#6 Limousin
#7 Devon
#8 Senepol

The first 4 are incorrect and the 2nd 4 are correct. On page 1 of this thread you can see the correct answers. I totally can see why anyone would think that first cow is red angus.
