    Rat tail cow

The rat tails don't do well in the cold. It is caused by interaction of different gene pairs. This article says that they must carry at least one black gene and be heterozygous at the other locus (I assume this is the locus where the rat tailed gene is located). This article does not talk...

    AI to a Gelbveih

There are a lot of good Gelvieh AI sires out there, but without knowing anything at all about your cows and what you are trying to accomplish, it is hard to recommend a bull to use on them. What are you looking for in terms of milk, muscle, frame, performance, birthweight, color, etc.?

    Flushing

You need to ask your embryologist some questions. How did she stimulate? Can you increase the dose of FSH? Did you get several unfertilized? low grades? Is the donor too fat or too thin? Is the feed and mineral program adequete? Some cows flush better after the calf is weaned some never...

    Good advice

A friend of mine built a calf warmer and put a heat lamp in it but it got too hot inside so he backed down to a 100 watt light bulb and it was about right.

    Best time for calving

There are a lot of different preferences for calving different times of the year and a lot of it has to do with your region. I don't like to calve in the summer here because of the flies and heat stress on the cow while she is in labor and that is when our pastures are probably at their worst...

    BW

Easy now CB. I was just being a little sarcastic. I thought you had a sense of humor. Like you just said anomolies can happen. You said you would ship a cow because she had a 100 lb calf because you don't want those genetics around. Who is to say it wasn't the bull's fault or just one of...

    BW

There is some info in here about calf shape. http://web1.msue.msu.edu/msue/imp/modaa/e1611921.html I liked the part titled cow size. It talks about calf weight relative to cow weight. I have always thought that if the breed associations would ratio the calf weight to the cows weight you could...

Does that mean you load the bull up and sell him too? Half the genetics are his. Better sell all the other calves out of him too, just to be safe.......since you got the trailer hooked up anyway.

after bag strutts how long until they come in

I think you misread my post. I have only pulled the calves when breeding donors to flush in hopes that they will respond better to the FSH. I would expect the conception rates when pulling the calves for a regular AI to be comparable to the rest of your conception rates on first cycles...

after bag strutts how long until they come in

The only time I have pulled the calves for breeding is with donor cows. I like to pull them calves off when I start shots and put back when I get the donors bred. For the rest of the herd they better come in on their own if they want to stay here. That is one of the things I have against...

    Getting semen shipped

Dry shippers still use liquid nitrogen they just have a sponge type material in them so they will not spill if tipped over. http://www.discountcryo.com/ProductDeta ... Code=CX100

    Breeding chutes

I used a box at a friends place. He just made a frame out of tubing and fastened plywood to it and hung a peice of tarp from the ceiling to block their view back over their hip. He had a heavy chain with a hook that he pulled behind them. It worked well. I just use my working chute...

after bag strutts how long until they come in

If the cows have not cycled, pulling the calves off for 72 hours may "jump start" their cycle and I would expect them to be in heat within a week. But this does not always work. If they were already cycling but did not breed, pulling the calves will probably not do anything unless they short...

What could be wrong with black angus cow, again????

It looks to me like it could be an incompletely formed siamese twin. If that is the case then I believe it is just a freak of nature and not something genetic. Just a guess......?

    Why wont they cycle?

Being fat generally does not stop a cow from cycling. It will cause the egg to be unable to pass through the follopian tube and reach the uterus. I would guess that heat detection is your problem. It can be tricky especially in small groups. The young cows and heifers may not try to ride...

    Arched back when AI-ing question

If he is big enough for his age and passed the semen test he should be ok.

    Sexed semen

Is the lower conception rates on both "heifer" and "bull" semen? I wonder if the reduction in conception rates is from decresed survivability of the semen due to the added processing or if it has anything to do with one sex or the other having and advantage at certain unterine ph levels or time...

    Questions about Lutalyse / AI

Assuming a 21 day cycle this is roughly what lutalyse does. Cows on day 1-6 of cycle lutalyse does not work. The CL has not formed Cows day 7-15 lutalyse will bring in heat 3-5 days. Cows day 16-21 of cycle will be in heat within 5 days anyway. I like to bring the cows in and heat check...

    Cidr's

Cystorelin will not cause the cow to abort. It acts on the follicle and will cause ovulation. http://www.uvm.edu/~bgottlie/CREAM2006W ... otocol.doc
