    Cull cows

So I had to see it with my own eyes. Never thought I would see $1.00 per pound cull cows but there were a couple Saturday at our local livestock auction (Eugene Livestock Auction in Junction City, Oregon). Lots of butcher cows sold for over 90 cents per pounds and tons in the 85 to 90 range. All...

    Heavy bred cow price

For $519 and some hay, I think you ended up with a pretty nice pair. That's how you make money. Nice job!

    It is December

Dave, just an FYI but Central Oregon Livestock Auction in Madras starts each weekly sale with butcher cows and bulls before diving into feeders and the other cattle.

Texas cattle auction Aug 31, 2020

Those prices aren't great, but they're not all that bad except those lows are really low. Must be Jersey steers or some real sickly calves. Keep in mind the week before Labor Day is usually a bad week to sell cattle with the upcoming holiday. Prices on calves should pick up some during the early...

    Sold my calves

If you got $1,250 each per head I think it was a great day for you considering the current market. Congratulations!

    Bottle Calves

Saw a calf sell today at the Toppenish (Wash.) Livestock Auction while watching online go for $400 (it might have been $375). Couldn't have been much older than 1 week; looked to be Black Angus.

    Ranch Sales

Haven't personally attended any sales other than one on March 14, and the demand for bulls that day was strong; heifers, not so much. It appears that a lot of folks are moving forward and having their sales as planned, though some have postponed them to a later date. Saw that Connealy Angus had...

    Encouraging sign?

Don't know what to make of this, but maybe this is an encouraging sign for 2020: Central Oregon Livestock Auction, Madras, Oregon Monday, Jan. 6, 2020 STEERS (top penlots) 300-400 lbs.: $200-$215 hwt 400-500 lbs.: $181-$217 hwt 500-600 lbs.: $165-$185 hwt This was a special feeder sale that...

    Sold a few today

At Central Oregon Livestock in Madras, Oregon on Monday, 600- to 700-pound steers went from $140-$153. Watched online for a while and saw a pen of 31 averaging 643 lbs. sell for $146.75, and a pen of 23 steers averaging 671 lbs. sold for $142. These prices were for weaned calves (a minimum of 30...

    Market is rough in MS!

Lease/rent your cattle and hay ground to industrial hemp growers. They're looking for all the land they can find, especially anything with water rights. Just read a story tonight that quoted someone saying quality industrial hemp can fetch from $20,000 to $80,000 an acre. You can do better...

    2019 sale for us

If I'm converting Canadian dollars to U.S. dollars correctly it sounded like you did pretty well overall. Very nice auction yard facility based on the video. The ringman could have used a little help, though! :)

    Local Sale Barn Closed

Did the auction yard in Enumclaw finally close down? I know it was for sale last year, but thought it was still open with new management ... though they were getting a very small run of cattle most weeks.

    Best time to sell

What specifically do you have to sell? That will make the difference as to when to sell, what to sell and where to sell.

    Cow turnover rate

The ability to maintain body condition plays a big role for me in making my decisions. If the cow can't maintain her body condition during the final trimester and the first couple of months after calving, I think it is best to let them raise that calf, don't re-breed them, and then sell them...

    Prices are up

Feeder cattle prices are up, particularly better quality vaccinated calves, with the weather getting warmer and the grass starting to grow. Slaughter prices had been coming up, but I noticed a downward trend the last week or two, especially on cows. Quality could be part of the price drop.

What am I missing? Pharo Bull sale

Man, do I ever wish cull cows were bringing $90 hwt. right now!

    Opinions on these prices?

I think many of us are hoping things turn around in a few months. I know I'm holding on to 2 older cows right now because I won't sell them that cheap. I'm hoping for an easy winter -- the prognosticators say it will be warmer than normal and dryer than normal this winter here -- and the hay...

    Calves are moving to town

The prices you are seeing East of the Cascades is far better than what we're seeing on the West side. That, in itself, isn't unusual for our markets, but the discrepancy in prices this fall is ridiculous. Those 400+ pound steers you saw bring $1.86 are only bringing $1.15 to $1.35 over here...

    Had a decent day

I'd say you had a very decent day. Congratulations!

Best time to buy bottle calves

Out here in the Pacific Northwest it is usually late fall and winter if you're buying through the livestock auctions. Prices are usually at their highest around now and continuing for the next several months. But as someone pointed out, it is market driven. The law of supply and demand.
