Don't know what to make of this, but maybe this is an encouraging sign for 2020:

300-400 lbs.: $200-$215 hwt
400-500 lbs.: $181-$217 hwt
500-600 lbs.: $165-$185 hwt

This was a special feeder sale that had 2,555 head (including butcher cows/bulls). Some of the best prices I've seen out west since early last spring.

Calf market is making the typical New Year bounce.

I am not a westerner, but there are generally higher calf prices there, that I assume are due to lower cost of gain.
 
It rained in California. It is that simple. When it rains down there they grow a lot of grass and need a lot of light calves to go to that grass. It doesn't happen every year but when it does it bumps our calf market up substantially.
 
My observation is they like them in the 400-500 pound range. Not too much over 600.
How far will they ship them? I have no idea. Freight is freight so that cost is easy to figure and deduct from the price paid. But there certainly is some additional deduction for sickness on ones shipped further. Weaned and double vaccinated calves are most certainly worth more when it comes time to ship for a distance.
