Back in the late 90's we had pipe dreams of a ranch up north, about 5,000 deeded acres and 500,000 or more in crown range, price was 3mil.. it's probably worth 20 mil now.. I think they ran 600 head with 1 cut of hay, and kept all calves until long yearlings, it was WAY out in the sticks (30 miles from a little nothing of a town, about 100 to a reasonable place), had it's own (big) powerplant too.
so the price on that place worked out to $5000/animal unit at the time, which I think could be made to work, but since it's probably $20,000 per unit now it's pretty unlikely... Certainly wouldn't work if you had to mortgage the place for sure, perhaps if you just had too much money it would still be workable
