Will constantly keeping hay in front of cattle make them bloat?

Help Support CattleToday:

I do that as well. I know several people that feed round bales in rings, and they put hay out every day; that's just their routine. I never understood why not put enough out to last a few days.
My cows get just what they'll clean up. One group would eat a bale and a half every 2 days. They get 1 bale every 2 days. They get silage, shell corn, and supp every night. Mine sort through the hay a whole lot less if you don't put as much in front of them.

Had this happen last winter. Happened with a 250 lb bull and a 400 lb steer. The larger calf i found while alive, but nothing I did helped. He wouldn't stand. Wouldnt eat. Appeared bloated. Never did ****. Died 2 days later.

The smaller calf I found dead. Had flopped around on ground and gone under a fence and down a hill about 20 feet. I saw him that morning problem free. No **** on his rear.

Both in same pasture. Months apart. No clue what it was. Thought maybe blackleg on the smaller calf. But I'm assuming. And that never works out right.
