Absolutely and I'm afraid more cattle are eating that crap than good hay. Nobody knows...they just roll it up and feed it and if the cow starves or looks like he&& it's their fault.
 
I add copper sulfate to the mineral mix and have good pasture. If some are still are poor doers then I usually bring them to town.

I kept one heavy milking simi/angus that sounds like yours. May want to consider early weaning till you figure this out.
