I plan on buying some PB simmental semen soon to breed some angus heifers and maybe some sim angus cows. I would like to stay purebred so I can register calves half sim if I choose to.

I would like to stay with ABS due to having a good relationship with my local rep. I have pretty much narrowed it down to these 2 bulls let me know what you think.

Hooks Beacon 56B

Hooks Yellowstone 97Y

thanks

Both pretty good bulls from what I've seen and heard. If it was me and my herd I'd go with Yellowstone. My cattle getting to moderate frame for my liking and Yellowstone has a bit more frame. Maybe with your Angus Beacon might match better?

Some on here think black with more and more white is the way to go. Well the sim scene won't know what hit it when this guy hits the market. I will call him ProdigiousTrendSetterMoneyMakerExtreme, be sure to get in early for this future breed progenitor.

One of the cows I plan to buy is a cowboy cut.

Do you not like either of those bulls I listed Ron?

I thought either one would be great for heifers.

Both have Shear Force in their pedigree. Beacon has outstanding numbers. I think both look good. I have not used him. As good as they look, I don't know anyone using them.

This is only trivia:

The Fall Harvest Sale sponsored by the Missouri Simmental Association was yesterday in Springfield. Fire Sweep has a thread on it. Hooks Yellowstone was in the pedigree of one Lot. None had Beacon. Take that for what it is worth.

Both well proven and both look like good choices...
I'm leaning towards Beacon for angus heifers, but either one should work for you.

Beacon has a small frame. If these are commercial cattle being sold in Kentucky, small frame is discounted.

Yellowstone would be my choice between the two.

Yellowstone, is the sire of Koch Big Timber hear several are trying him.
I didn't like the fact that Yellowstone was deceased. I've been trying to find when and how he died but I'm not having any luck. Longevity is a good trait to have in your bloodline.

True Grit that bothered me to. Looks like he didn't make it to 7 years old.

I really like Koch big timber also. He caught my eye a while back but I haven't seen any calves out of him.

Ron has pretty much convinced me to use cowboy cut. I talked to my genex rep this morning and he's going to get me a cane but wants me to wait and make sure there's not gonna be a sale on it.

One of the cows I plan on getting is out of cowboy cut so I'll have to find something different for her.

ABS has fallen behind on good bulls. While you are dealing with Genex, you might check out All In. I have not used him, but I have used a couple other bulls out of his dam. She is super great.
Edit: an old bull ABS may still have is Sand Ranch Hand. He was under-used. Great cow maker. A have one left and I had a cleanup bull by him.

I have Sand Ranch Hand in my tank! He was a good bull.
Yellowstone is the sire of Elevate, who Ron and I have use a bunch with luck (he is a Genex bull).
Kentucky Guy, I doubt there will be a sale on Cowboy Cut, since he stopped collecting and they got behind on production.
I am a Genex delegate, so I get some of the info sooner than others.... that is how I found out he stopped collecting and is now collecting again.

Good point and while I know nothing of the Kentucky market or of his angus heifers, there are many who complain
Black Angus frames have gotten too large to make good replacements. IF that is true of his angus then Beacon might be
the better choice for the very reason that he would help limit frame size.... just saying frame is the reason I'm leaning towards Beacon.

Jeanne, you mentioned that ABS had gotten behind. I was thinking of using JBS Big Casino this year. What are your thoughts on him? Has anyone else used him? What kind of cows does he produce?

I like the whole package here. The numbers are decent, he has a nice rugged look, and he seems to be very docile. Plus, he has a white face!! LOL Ron!! Herefords and blaze faced Simmi's keep us happy around here.

Revved Up is probably the Hereford we will use also.

You are correct my rep texted me today and said he was not able to even get cowboy cut right now. I'm going to give him a week, but may end up just using Yellowstone.

First let me see I have never used big casino or seen any of his calves but if you search his name on google and type in cattletoday after it you will find several threads about him on here.

Most were really happy with the growth of his calves but seems most of them were really wild and the females had a lot of issues.

He is in the top 2% for docility and the top 1% for stayability according to the EPD's. Is this a case of the numbers don't match the results???

I don't want crazy daughters to deal with!
