When to shred

Help Support CattleToday:

yes shredd in the fall or when the weeds get to bad.all ive done is spot shredd some. not really wanting to cut what grass there is. scott

I like to knock it all down (top it) at the end of the year, so when the fall rains hit, it is nothing but good grass until it goes dormant. Also helps in the calving pastures so you can see the little boogers, and it tends to run the rat population somewhere else too!

We "shread" (brushhog) our pastures after cattle have grazed it to knock down remaining weeds. Always try to mow weeds about flowering stage, prior to seeding (for the annuals). As a result, we are mowing one pasture or another about every month on a rotating basis. What water/moisture there is, prefer the grass (not weeds) uptake it. If the area is in one of our irrigated accessible areas, we always water after mowing.

When I "spot shred" it scatters goat weed seeds everywhere. When I spray em they come back. Any Texan with goat weed advice ?

thanks,

Spray with Grazon in mid April. Goat weed will come back, but you can get significant control with Grazon. Disturbing the soil will cause goat weed to come back fast, or so I noticed. We dug out an extension to one tank that did not have visible weed, but where we dumped the soil, goat weed came back so thick it was unreal.

If you do a search for goatweed you'll see a picture from last year. It's also called doveweed and wooly croton and some unprintables

Dun, please don't tell me that the goat weed is the same stuff that I see on the store shelves advertised as "Horny Goat Weed!" If it is, anyone with it on their property needs to put a sign on the side of the field, and they will never have to mow it again. Just out of curiosity  has anyone tried it and does it work?  One guy came waltzing in with a pack of it at work. He said he bought it for someone else!

we have stuff here we call "goatgrass", gets tall and has red flowers. i like to chew on it, its kind of bitter..same stuff?

Is that goatweed the same thing we call "doveweed"? Doves love it. I've heard one way to semi-control it is to not let it get a seed head on it. Havn't tried Grazon on it yet....but I will. Very difficult to get rid of.

As I was saying.......

I looked it up and it isn't the same thing. The bottled stuff has a elongated heart shaped leaf that appears to be a low growing vine. Everybody stop, come back in the house and stop picking it. I was mistaken. :)

Mowing is like revenge killing of weeds because the weed had to be tall enought to cut. It takes the same amount of nutrients and water to grow weeds as it does grass, so spraying when the weeds are 3in. or less is probably more cost effective.

Mowing can be beneficial to invigorate new growth and aesthetics. Mowing tall, tough grass in late summer will encourage new tender and more nutritious grass for the fall.
