What AI bulls are you using this breeding season?

Help Support CattleToday:

Humm AAR Ten X I have only seen a few of his calves, but the ones I did see were not very impressive. For us we choose on pedigree, phenotype and performance. Fifteen years ago I would have been all over Ten X but have had enough experience with the bull of the month club now to stay focused on our program and let everyone else chase rainbows.

That being said once the bull has some daughters in production that I can see I might actually use him but it takes five years to really know if he works or not on the cow side of the equation.

I do not mean to knock the bull just not the right bull for our program at least not at this time.

BSE

The XXP bull has been on my radar for awhile I really like him and will probably get some in the tank for next year. I would this year but my husband has put me on restriction as far as semen and embryo purchases. I was going to use Really Windy but am afraid he puts more hair on them than our climate can stand, but I really like everything about the bull.

It is always interesting to me to see what bulls other folks are using. I have been working on our list it is as follows:
Agreed, and I've been doing the same thing

VAR Reserve
Hoover Dam
PVF Insight
SAV Mustang
Coleman Regis

Also have some interest in:

PA Power Tool
SAV Registry
SAV Angus Valley
Werner War Party
New Day 454
GAR Composure
I am also VERY interested in trying out Connealy Union 215X (Consensus x InFocus), but I'm too chicken to pull the trigger on such a young unproven bull, although if I can get any more info on him in the next year I might try him in 2015. I guess the same goes for Angus Valley, Registry

If anyone has any information or feedback on my list of A.I. bulls, I would much appreciate your criticism and opinion on my current choices.
Thanks

Just one comment on your second list.
New Day 454 is a good bull, but he is a confirmed carrier of Developmental Duplication (DD). That is a defect that can cause various deformities, such as extra limbs. The risks are low and it would require at minimum the cow to also be a carrier. It is now suspected that to display the defect the animal needs to receive the gene from both parents, and also carry a modifier gene. Even though risk of an actual defect are low, it would reduce the marketability of any offspring as breeding animals.

I thought XXP was no longer readily available? I believe Sinclair pulled him off the market. I have seen some semen selling from private parties, but the price is $100 per straw. He is a bull, I was interested in, but his docility EPD fluctuated wildly. He started out good and his owners claimed he had excellent docility. In January 2013, after he began getting some heavy use, his EPD for docility dropped to -16 with a .50 accuracy. As of today he has a +26 with an accuracy of .71. Talk about a wild ride. Most of it seemed to occur after he was no longer available through Genex. I considered using him last spring, but was no longer able to find semen in my price range. That is one of the risks of waiting for accuracy, but it may have been for the best.

Katapu you are right he was pulled from Genex and he is running 100 per straw but Ten X is 60. I like him alot, have a 4yr old daughter were going to flush and have 2 Sept calves out of him a bull and a heifer. As far as docility the cow is calm as can be and the calves dont have a care in the world, I think sometimes its how there handled no matter the breeding, if you look at his picture with Jeff Ward sitting on him seems pretty calm.
Its right what you say about waiting sometimes. like the Ten X bull ive seen lots of wet daughters they seem to work just fine, but it is like Gizmon says may take 5 yrs before we really know, but if you dont sample a few of these bulls you will find yourself wishing you had. You have to wrap your head around what you think will work. Its all hit or miss.

I sure didn't realized that Genex had pulled XXP or that his semen had got that high. I guess for us that ship has sailed. Your right waiting at times will sure make you look back and wish you would have jumped in, but sometimes it makes you say whew glad I dodged that bullet. It would sure be nice if we had a crystal ball that could make all of breeding selections great ones. Unfortunately we don't so we just do the very best we can to produce functional cattle.

Hard to think that far ahead (June) when a snowstorm is going on- temps are dropping below zero- and there is 6 inches of new snow on the ground :santa: ... ;-)

But if I do A.I. anything I may use WOLF CREEK PLAINSMAN # 16455884 on a few heifers...He looks like a good calve on their own heifer bull that still fits the easy keeping efficiency type cow we are looking for...

Mostly tho I hope to use our own bulls Lazy Bar B Juanada Rito 06X #16741353 and Lazy Bar B Trackrunner #17506127 again .... I have a bull calf sired Three Trees Prime Cut 0145 that we kept we may use too..

Short list if calves seem to be doing good.

Angus:RM Turning Point on Angus and some SimAngus heifers http://www.origenbeef.org/semen_detail.php?bull=314

Simmental: Big Casino on Angus and some 3/4 and 1/2 blood Simmentals
http://abs-bs.absglobal.com/beef/simmen ... o=29SM0451

Clubby: First Impression to make some show heifers on some % Simmentals
http://www.selectsiresbeef.com/index.ph ... lub%20Calf

For sure list
Simmental: Substance on PB's http://www.selectsiresbeef.com/index.ph ... d=SimAngus

Mo Better 90% sexed Female on heifers http://genex.crinet.com/beef/index.php? ... 90&lang=EN

Will use bunch other bulls like Moto Moto and some clubby heifers, Trendsetter on % Simmentals, sexed 90% Right Answer and some % Simmental heifers, Slugger Simmental, Yellow Jacket and Dakota Gold for clubby bulls.

Just weaned GAR Prophet calves and bred cows to Deer Valley All In for Spring.

For the Fall calving cows it seems to be down to those two bulls. I will probably go with All In since I have several Prophet daughters I will be breeding. I like to breed the herd to as few bulls as possible.

I use Genex, as I have a reliable rep.

For the Tarentaise I am using this bull as I need something to sell:

MOHNEN LONG DISTANCE 1639
1AN01202 - 16455862

For the Polled Hereford heifer, I will use this one for her first calf. I hope he puts a better rear end on her calves:

TH 122 71I VICTOR 719T
1HP00829 - P42800895

I had used this bull on my old Tarentaise cow and we had an excellent steer. Locally I see so much breeding not only to this particular bull but to his very close relatives available through AI that I'm happy with using Victor.

We use Revolution 4R, very pleased with the calves we get from him. If you are still looking around at Hereford bulls that are going to add some thickness we are very happy with the Hyalite On Target 936 calves we got this year, even planning to use one of the bulls we got who might be the thickest calf we've bred. He's not a Genex bull but Rausch Herefords who owns him also owns Revolution and I believe when we ordered semen on him it they released it to us through Genex possibly? Video of him in the pasture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNxCut3GVZA He's a non certificate AI like Revolution too which is a plus

Here's a photo of the 4 bulls we are feeding out, the 2 on the left are On Target 936 sons, the 3rd from left is a Revolution son and the furthest right is a younger bull out of our herd sire. You can definitely tell the 2 on the left have the best butts on them.

Here's a couple pics of the bull we're planning to keep for ourselves out of 936, nice stout guy and has some thickness you don't always see in some Polled bulls.

We did get 1 936 heifer, she is out of a first calf Revolution daughter. She probably doesn't have quite the thickness as our top Revolution heifer in the calf crop does but she has some nice length and depth of rib to her, will be interesting to see what she looks like when she grows out some.
