I am looking to formulate a ration to feed on dormant bluestem in the wintertime. There is alot of volume of grass but the protien is low. The ration needs to be built around ground cotton burs and whole cottonseed. What other ingredients are needed and in what proportion? Does anyone have a "recipe"? I have a mixer truck to mix the ingredients. I want to feed 500 to 700 lb. stockers. Thanks!

With ample dry grass, supplementing 5#/hd/day of whole cottonseed should get you decent gains. The cottonseed will provide the needed protein plus the fat from the cs oil will provide good energy. Have wintered dry cows this way & they gained weight in the process. Stockers should do better.

Just sold a yearling heifer that was self-fed a mixture of 50% soyhulls, 35% corn gluten pellets & 15% whole cottonseed. She also had free choice access to cotton burrs. Gained 285 lb in 84 days, 3.39#/day avg.

Lots of possibilities out there. You might want to consult a nutritionist.
