When buying registered cattle how do you research the bloodlines and history of that animal. Also how do you know the animal being sold IS the animal on the papers. Could they be switched? Can you easily check by looking without offending the seller?

it is pretty easy researching an animal through the Angus Association if you have a registration number. As far as trusting that the animal is who they say it is, in 25 years we have only had one issue a bred heifer purchased at a dispersal sale DNA showed she was not what she was supposed to be and the seller made it right. A breeder that won't stand behind his/ her product won't be in business long.

Ear tattoos should correspond to paper work. But that doesn't guarantee they tattooed the right animal, or knew for sure the breeding.

In Brangus, you can look up everything online. DNA testing helps keep everything straight. I second what Gizmom said. A breeder is only as good as their word.
