We just purchased a cow and calf with the intention to butcher her then eventually the little her as she is no longer breedable.

The calf is a bit deformed at first she looked like she fell on her face but after further inspection she looks like she has a buffalo head with an off set jaw and the tip of her tongue stick out a bit. Her face is short with no neck. She eats fine and seems healthy otherwise. What is the best feed for her as we are getting ready to wean? I want it as natural as possible. No by products. She will have access to 4 acres but will need to be fed for her main feed the feild is not the best.

Second what is the best way to get the cow ready for butcher. She is in fairly good weight. 3 yrs old and a holstein/angus cross. She is not breedable as she had a very rough delivery as we were told- it was recommended by a vet to her previous owner to not breed her again. (reason we have her)

Do we have to dry her up before we take her in?
Will it effect the meat?
If so what is the best way to wean without mastitis?
She is milkable by hand if that will help.

all you need todo is feed her some till you decide to butcher her.she dont need tobe dryed up tobe butchered.the calf needs tobe weaned off of there though.you can wean the calf at 6 months old.an put it on feed an hay.

Do U now for sure she had a rough delivery, I wonder what the circumstances were? Might want to have her checked out by a vet before you butcher her, she may be fine, and it would be a shame to butcher her if U could make some money on her, and get her bred back.

The calf can be fed some sweet feed grain, and free choice hay, with a good water source, and be fine.

If you perfer to dry her off don't grain for 2-3 days.1st cut hay only.water.If she still has milk. Milk out 1 time wait 1week if no milk your good to go.Still milk in her .Take that out -wait 1 week if not much in her don't bother. When you take the grain off them they dry up faster. As far as the calf 16-18% starter .After that buy some corn have your feed mill or a neighbor grind it.Maybe you can buy a little ground feed off a farm near you. For just 1 calf you wouldn't need much.
