Piney Woods Cattle

Help Support CattleToday:

Interesting article, there has been a growing trend internationally toward reviving rare and minority breeds which are adapted to the local environment and thrive on forage without grain supplimentation, these are a typical example of this trend.

But they seem to be planning to change them, making them bigger and taking off the horns. So will they still be the same cattle?

Most of the Piney Woods cattle around here several years back were solid black with horns. Supposedly they were Corriente's. Still a few left.

They've been around for years and years. DeSoto supposedly brought some up the Alabama river during one of his expeditions sometimes during the 1500's.

Brought some hogs too. They were very long snouted hogs that everyone here called "Pineywood Rooters".

No that would defeat the whole object. As I always maintain with my breed, concentrate on the positive aspects, heat resistance, low maintenence, fertility etc, then cross to introduce the other traits needed for the commercial market.
No one breed fits all requirements, but good crossbreeding programs will give the commercial producer what he needs for the local market with the added benefit of heterosis.

in the {southern}east texas area we refer to them as woods cattle never thought about the historical aspect . they are red ,black mixed with some white. these cattle are gentle and easly worked.
