Our local calf pool (in WVa) has shifted from a feeder in Iowa to a lot in Nebraska. Last week they were paying us $124 a cwt for 8 wt steers with both a 7 way and respiratory shot in their background. The lot is paying the freight, we get paid on load out weights. This order takes heifers on some loads -6 cents back. There is a 3 cent deduction for any fullblood char, herf, lim, gelbvieh, shorthorn, or red simm.
The thing I like about this is the fact that those off-breeds are really cheap here, especially in heifers. These are the easiest deductions we have ever had, It has already started making me some money.
What are you guys thoughts on this deal? I can't believe they are willing to pay only $9 a cwt more for a good blk or bwf steer than a shorthorn heifer?
