I doubt it was taken down for being insensitive to the religious group but maybe for the comments I made about the pencil and paper. If anyone was offended by my comments I apologize. I too, was trying to be funny as was inyati. I thought the post was hilarious.

Not the same thread. The one where I mentioned "lead in my pencil" was entitled, "Life Event". The one that was deleted was entitled, "Jakob Yoder". I will send it to you. Not your fault. Rest easy!!!

For whatever its worth thats my last name and I wasn't offended. But maybe some have thinner skin than I.

I saw it on FB and found it funny.

I find a lot of people take themselves and their views a little too seriously.

Amen

Toad Yoder?
I assume my friends always called me Toad because I'm short fat and ugly. :D And I get my last name of Yoder honest as well, 3 of my 4 grandparents were Yoders. My dad always said he was going to get papers on us kids. My grandparents left the Amish and I left the Mennonittes, I moved out the week I turned 18. All of my immediate family is still strict Mennonitte and I'm the heathen black sheep I guess. :cowboy:

Hi Toad,
Comedy is not meant to be mean spirited. Does anyone remember the old TV series where they "roasted" a guest each week? Don Rickles jokes were always degrading – in a funny way, not mean spirited. Sex, politics and religion are subjects often employed in comedy. Three stand-up comedians who took those topics to the extreme were Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, and George Carlin. Bill Cosby often did a performance in which he talked to God.

Toad, glad you did not see the humor as mean spirited or tasteless. I remain respectful of those who do. One cannot presume to be able to "get inside the head" of another person. That is sacred and precious space.

I apologize for my response to Bigfoot. In retrospect, his post was a sincere expression of his feelings which is fair enough.

PS: Redd Foxx used the culture of black America for most of his scripts. For example, What is black America's National bird? - The fly. I know Highgrit and other good ole boys will not be offended by that.

PS2: For everyone, Redd Foxx: We were poor. If I wasn't a boy, I wouldn't have had nothing to play with.

Hey! Leave the door open will ya? The flies haven't been out all day.

They let everyone get a show these days! My background is strange but I've settled down and done alright for myself. I "married up" as they say and now run a farm as well as serve in elected office in my local government. Life has been pretty darn good to me although I can't even imagine what it would have been like if I had stayed Mennonitte.

Well I am certainly anticipating the results of the heterosis jump from Jakob's genes. Can't wait for the next chapter......

Toad,
There are many large Mennonite and Amish communities in this area. I buy my outdoor clothes there. And yes, they are Yoder brand name clothes. Most of the Amish communities here are Yoder. That is fact. My son's fiancé is from Indianapolis and her father is a medical specialist in genetic maladies affecting the Amish people of Indiana. He is employed in private practice and has a state contract to administer to the genetic diseases resulting from a closed genetic pool.

I have a Mennonite friend (term used loosely) who delivers materials. He has indicated to me, he plans to follow your path and leave the community and go out on his own. I had my D3G Cat dozer and he ask me if he could start it. Before I could answer, he started it. Said the most rewarding thing he had ever done was operate a dozer. I told him I have a very similar feeling about it. He said there was a dozer at one of the communities and he had operated it. I think Mennonites are permitted to use motor vehicles and equipment unlike the Amish but I think the Amish cheat on that limitation as I have seen a few communities with Skid steers.

I have nothing against either group. They perform a lot of services here: Construction particularly pole barns, welding, retail metals, retail clothes, furniture, etc. I am going to look at some mineral feeders this week that are built and sold by the Amish near Mayslick, KY.

The biggest complaint I have heard is about the Amish being a hazard on the highway. My friend Adrian Craig does not like the Amish. The only thing he comes up with is that they will trespass on his land to hunt deer but they will not let him hunt on their land. Seems a little trite to me but you would have to know Adrian.

Ryan: I have heard some real life stories about injecting new genes into their communities but I am sure to be banned if I tell them. Maybe Toad will share some inside info.

Ryan, You should convert to Amish. You could explore the nature and effects of "line breeding". In fact, you could become personally involved in line breeding.

I've met Amish and Mennonite people who are really good people that I would trust anywhere. I've also met some who use the religion as a tool to maintain control over people. I guess any select group of people have good and bad apples. I know I will never ever go back under any circumstances.
I like the idea of studying line breeding in their community hahaha It probably isn't as much a factor as it was 50 years ago. The Amish find ways to cheat their system, for example my Mennonite uncle once had a full time job driving them around in their company owned vehicles. As long as an LLC owned the trucks and they hired someone else to drive it was okay under their rules.

Use to know an old boy who had a wife sort of like that.

I use it as an example all the time to people. There is a recessive disorder in some of the PA communities where the kids never go past 3 years old mentally. They have whole houses dedicated to caring for them out of sight so to say. So in a closed gene pool it can become fixed and remains. In livestock we remove those animals to rid the herd of it. Does not happen with humans. Take a look at some Amish folks next time. Most are peas in a pod physically. Pretty good example eh?

Sorry I can't go Amish cause I like zippers and blue is not my favorite color of clothing.

Ryan, you know I was enjoying sport with you. You and I are good friends. It did make me wonder about line breeding when you see all the genetic issues in closed gene pools. ;-)
