My friend picked up her cattle this weekend. From July 3 to October 3, a group of her heifers (different breeds, just over 1 yr old) lived out here and ate grass in some of our pastures, since we had more grass than our cows could keep up with. They got a few range pellets here and there at first to get em to come when I called so I could move em easily, and mineral. They gained about 1.2 pounds a day per head, and I made just over $700. And we got some grazing on some pasture that needed it. I'm pretty happy with that.

Congrats! That is a far better way to manage pasture than stocking it to the hilt and feeding hay and other supplements. Added bonus is that you come away with a profit.

I enjoyed it. Wish I was close enough to do something like that for some of you TX folks this summer. Sad to me for people to have to sell off cattle they'd really like to keep.
