Why do you say it isnt perennial ryegrass? Im relying on my Plant ID app so im sure its possible it isnt.Haven't ID'd it yet, but definitely not perennial ryegrass.

My thought was that since it was just heading out that the seed had not spread out from the stem yet.View attachment 44257
Perennial (and annual, for that matter) ryegrass seedheads have these alternating groups of seeds on an undulating stem. Looks nothing like those in the the original photos
I think the seedhead not being open is making it look different and not as easy to identify.Whatever it is, it would be much easier to ID if the seedhead was open. I would have guessed quackgrass.
The seedhead isn't fully expanded by far. All of the 'seeds' will be attached directly to the rachis in perennial rye. This seedhead/inflorescence is going to be/is a panicle when fully developed. I'm going to guess your plant ID is recognizing a rachis rather than a panicle that isn't fully expanded. Why do you say it isnt perennial ryegrass? I promise you its not fescue. I rely on fescue 11 months of the year.I'm not really seeing the similarity to fescue.
The only similarity is the seedhead before it spreads out.I'm not really seeing the similarity to fescue.
I promise you it is not. I have ryegrass here too. It's rye grass I have 55 acres of it
Oh, my! OK. that thought had crossed my mind. Anyone else notice the "W" on the leaves? It's brome! The seeds look somewhat uncharacteristically thin, but there is no doubt in my mind on the ID.I found another clump yesterday. Has the thinnest little seeds.
@ClinchValley86, after figuring out it is brome, the answer to this is yes. It's present where you are, but not near as common as north of you and north of me for that matter. Well, in reference to southern Ohio anyway.Do we like it?
