Many will be forced to sell out of old family property used for cattle.

I took a job out of state to avoid things like that. They can always come back when things turn around.

It's been a brewing for some time. I don't think current monetary conditions had much to do with it other than they can probably make more by selling their contracted power than using it to smelter aluminum. A lot of people in the area worked their at one time or another.

Heard about Alcoa on the news. Had a good friend worked there for years. Retired about 7-8 years ago. Will hurt but that's a booming area so hopefully hard working folks can find work.

This is the worst of times to lose a job, with all the scare out there. It may be worse of a time than when I was laid off in '85.

The nuke industry may blow wide open. It has been a dying industry for 30 years. Zachary is San Antone is staffing up for construction. They may try that. The new generation plants are going to be totally different than the old. It is going to be a matter of learning everything all over again. Good craftsman or technicians could transfer and be an asset.

Boogie...seems I heard or read where there is talk of putting in two more units at Comanche Peak. Is that the talk around your county?? Sure would be a home run for the area.

All the influx of people is what makes me want to move out of the area. It is busting at the seams. Then there is the gas now too. If you go up 51 to Weatherford, be prepared to sit at the I-20 intersection for 25 minutes. If you go through Granbury, take the old downtown "business" route. It is about 10 to 15 minutes faster than the "bypass".

We are in a total mess.

IF you think this bailout is going to save jobs you are wrong. It is just slowing down the process.

It may sound cruel but people and businesses have to go down in times like these. IF they were smart when their finances the will make it. IF the gov. bails them out its called wellfare or socialism, if they re-distribute wealth its called communism. The world isn't always a bright sunny place. People can't always have the house they have always wanted, not every one can have a job all the time, ect.. Its part of the reality of democracy and free market.

We have been in good times, if you based your life style or your business on it going up, up, up and never down its your own fault.

Could very well be right, by slowing it down folks might be able to see it coming.

Folks are in trouble because they have broken into the piggy bank (equity in their home) to pay for toys and now risk losing a job. What do they do now? IF they have a 401k or retirement fund they can raid, it is going to cost them big time doing that also. 10% penalty + taxes and whatever value it has already lost. And what will congress learn from all of this? Nothing, they will continue to spend and waste money like a drunken sailor. (No offense meant to the drunken sailors). All because they believe borrowing today and paying back in the future with dollars that are worth less than they spent is a good thing.

They take what is coming to them. People have gotten out of hand with their spending and now will have to learn the hard way.

Their family, church, community and other organizations need to step up and help them through it.... not the federal govt.

I don't know vett. People are still living outside of the plain old economic sense we learned in school over 30 years ago.

Did our grandfathers buy new vehicles all the time? :D

... and roll the debt from one into the other.

I guess maybe I am lucky to have some one who lived through the depression and always reminds every one how bad things can really be.

There was a senator or some thing like that on the radio yesterday. He said we needed this bailout because, for example, some one called his office and said they were looking for a house and couldn't get approved. He said," ... and that is not right..." :x

That is what got us in this mess in the first place, not every one deserves a house and brand new car. They deserve what they earn. I guess that guy didn't listen to the other 9 people calling his office saying they will have him removed if he votes for the bailout.

Yep, that is the problem in a nutshell. We better figure out how to live within our means again. Both on a personal level and a national level.

Or gettig through Cresson at 377 and 171. I read yesterday that TxDot said that 6000 trucks go through there every day. I don't even go through there anymore. I take Hwy 4, and that's crowded sometimes. I hate getting behind some soccer mom in a mini van that drives 45 all the way. No shoulders and no way to safely pass. That road was made for driving fast. I would like to at least get up to the speed limit on it.

Have you read the proposed traffic solution for Cresson? I don't know where Broadway Street is in Cresson. One way traffic on Boradway and the onther down 377. I hate to see that happen. Nothing could compell me to move back to Granbury. Nothing.

Lammie,

When I go to the tractor place for parts in Weatherford now, I take the old cattle drive route; Thorpe Spring to Tin Top to Weatherford. Even tho parts of that route on the old black top is 40 mph, it is at least 20 minutes faster.

There is no way for me to get around the Cresson jams. Either you just don't go to Fort Worth, or else you traverse at 3 a.m.

It is not just vehicles either boogie. For example yesterday I took my 2 year old cell phone into the cell phone place to have the mic repaired. Kid looks up my account he sees that I am no longer under contract so he tells me I am could get a new phone for x amount of dollars if I sign a new 2 year contract. I said no just fix the phone I have. All these kids in the store kept telling me how dumb I was for not getting the new phone. No brainer one kid said. I guess even though I'm young I'm just not part of the throw away generation. Phone will be fixed by the end of the week.

I didn't think those things were supposed to last for more than two years. Mine is always a raggy POS by the time my contract is up. I hate my phone anyway. AT&T is the network with the fewest dropped calls, my a$$.

With this $700 billion dollar bail out in mind (some say it is $850 billion) does anybody know what the Chrysler bail out was in the 80's. Wikipedia said it was $1.5 billion. That can't be right.

Memory fails me, but I believe that is right. One difference is that Chrysler's deal was loan guarantees which were repaid, not the outright purchase by the government of bad investments.

Reckon we found the bottom in the stock market yesterday or is this nightmarish ride going to continue downhill? Three, four, five percent per day losses starts adding up after a while...

Is it just me, or does it appear that the markets are not very optimistic about the "rescue" efforts of the government? Just doing the simple math here, but 20 days x 5% loss per day x my 401k value = $0. That's humor folks. Kindof.

It always amazes me how the market can drop 10% and you start to hear stories about people losing half their money .I guess if your too heavy in the wrong thing . My only stock is the live kind and it aint been doing very well either .

A smart fella I know has always warned me said, "even turds rise with an incoming tide its when the tide recedes they stand alone and stink on the beach".
