Cougars, particularly males, often deposit scats in prominent spots such as rocks, logs, the centers of game trails, ridgelines and the like. Keep an eye out for nearby cougar tracks: They're four-toed; typically 10.16 centimeters (4 inches) wide and 8.9 centimeters (3.5 inches) long; and usually lack claw marks

I did...does that make it wrong? And they don't always leave tracks. Depends on the surface.
