hey Im gettin a heffer AI'd and Im trying (without a scale available) to get a approximate weight. I measured girth just behind the front shoulders at the narrowest point and got 65 inches. the formula i used gave me 770 pounds. does that sound right to you? I also came up with a daily gain of 1.82 pounds... is that in the ball park of where she should be she is a red angus and is one year old
Thankls Bill[/img]

I`m very pleased with WT tape, in 2006 I had hereford x angus
heifer and i used the tape on her 1st.birthday, tape showed her 805 lbs. took her to scales 9 miles away, goverment scales showed her at 800. Yes they are quite accurate. (my opinion).

Getting Your Cattle Weights Without a Scale

If it is not possible to scale weigh cattle, tape measuring is a handy alternative way to estimate weight. Remember that it only gives you an approximation of the animal's weight.

How To Measure Your Beef Cattle:

Stand the animal with head in normal position and with the four legs set squarely under the body.
Pass the tape tightly around the body just back of the shoulders at the smallest circumference
it is recommended that the animal be kept off feed and water for 12 hours before measuring. An overnight shrink is enough.

I didnt have a tape measure that was cloth or flexible so i tied a string to a metal washer and tossed it under her then reached under and got it around her just behind the shoulders... pulled it up to where it was snug and tied a knott there to mark the lenth then later measured it... worked ok i guess the vet weighed her yesterday and i was off by 23 pounds... Thats pertty close id say..

sure apreciate all the help I get on here you all are great... Thank you.... Bill

Try this link for a table of measurements and weights. This will get you close in most cases.

I posted this question myself on another thread, but I'll ask it here with out hijacking this. How close are the weight tapes on new borns, to get the BW. I taped my new calf at 30.5 inches, 92 lbs. Just by picking him up, I don't think so, but he's the only calf so far so nothing to compare him to.

I hate to admit this to anyone but when I first got into registered cattle I didn't have a calf scale so I would pick the calves up and compare them to my Scotch Collie because I knew he weighed 85 pounds.Thank goodness we used a calving ease bull for I don't know how I would have judged their weight if I couldn't lift them.
