We're relatively new at this... went out to feed (hay) this morning and one of the calves (a little over 1 year) is listless, not interested in food or water, and foaming at the mouth. Any ideas on what could be wrong with him?

I am on the other side of the World so I can't help much. What does the vet say? If you havne't got medication in the fridge, here you would need to get it from a vet.

Sounds like pneumonia. Seen that before and didn't react quick enough=300 dollar lesson. Dead calf! Get to the vet quick and get the medicine and ask for some fluids that you can put in the calf under the skin. It looks funny but it really helps them with hydration. I like to do that over tubing them if I can to get them hydrated. Good luck.

Check his temp. If no fever he has something caught in his mouth or throat. Gurgly sound could be from excess saliva production, and could also cause the foaming. Does he act as if he's chewing on something
