Breeding Rodeo Stock

Help Support CattleToday:

We have a friend who is a stock contractor and raises bucking stock. He has been in the business for a very long time and his brood stock is former bucking stock that has proven itself in the arena.

A couple of years ago, a bucking stock breeder dispersed his stock at the local auction. It was advertised and there were buyers from all over including Mexico. The stock went higher than the average price. The high selling bull went for $2.30 lb = $5290.00. He was huge and stuck one horn through a 3/4" plywood wall on a gate. When he did that, the bidding went wild.

The cows brought top dollar too.

There are bucking stock sales. You can google "breeding rodeo stock" and bucking stock auctions sales and bring up info about it.

Many of the bucking horses have a little draft horse in them. It makes for a powerhouse of a horse.

RESEARCH YOUR GENETIC POTENTIAL AND DECIDE ON WHAT TRAITS TO BREED FOR, STRENGTH,TEMPER, SPEED, ETC... DO YOU WANT PASTURE BRED ANIMALS, A.I., OR EMBRYO TRANSFER WORK. THIS DAY AND AGE I KNOW A VET OR TWO REALLY INTO CLONING. MAKE THOSE DECISIONS AND CALL ME BACK WHEN WE GET EM ON THE GROUND.

Like dalebarber said genetics plays a major part. The buck is in the genes. Other than that I would imagine having a good herd management program would be a priority. If you can, try to talk to someone in the Industry for advice. You'll need to find out at what age the animals are trained, sold, and what the rodeo contractor wants. Also what you need for handling facilities.

I did a search and found a couple of breeders with websites:

This one is in Texas: http://www.barfrodeo.com/

Good luck.

It is a hard business to get into and make money and more so now than ever. It is an expensive proposal and in my opinion doesn't have long term sustainability. It's a bubble right now wait till it pops.
