Hey guys,

Does anyone have any good books on cattle (beef or dairy) that they would suggest as being a good resource to have around?

After seeing it in many posts I just ordered "Storey's Guide to Beef Cattle", but I have a lot more to learn than just one book can teach me!!

Thanks in advance,
TCFC

For great cattle business principles in an entertaining format I would recomend John Clays My Life on the Range and Conrad Kohr's autobiography if you can find copies

Thanks for the suggestions! I will definitely be ordering some of those, trying to find them on sale on Amazon.com ;)

I definitely have the Merck Manual already, that book is my saving grace in vet school - everything you could care to know at your fingertips it seems at times!!

It seems I will be doing some online book shopping now - as soon as I finish my assignment that is ;)

Keeping Livestock Healthy- http://www.amazon.com/Keeping-Livestock ... 559&sr=1-1

Merck Veterinary Manual 18th edition-This is the same books vets use in Vet school.-

A Field Guide to cows- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... attletoday

Is the Merck Vet. Man. the same as the one online? I've never gotten it because I figured I had it on the internet but maybe I am wrong and the hard copy contains more info?

Beef Cattle Science 7th edition by M. E. Ensminger
Dairy Cattle Science (prefer latest edition) by Ensminger
Beef Production and Management Decisions 5th edition by Thomas G. Field
Beef Cattle 8th edition by A. L. Neumann & Keith S. Lusby

And many more...

As far as I know it is the exact same thing as the one online. I just like to have a hard copy for when I don't have internet access - but you're not missing anything by not having the hard copy as far as I know!

The attached link has a number of very good books about various aspects of the cattle business. The one I most highly recommend is "Knowledge Rich Ranching". It is more about the business side of the cattle business than the production side. Have read most of the other books listed and they are all very good.

Thanks.:)

TCFC, much to my wife's chagrin, I'm a book hound. I started collecting cow books some years ago, and some of my favorites are:

The Lasater Philosophy of Cattle Raising (go to http://www.isacattleco.com) my favorite.
Getting Started with Beef & Dairy Cattle...Thomas
Successful Small Scale Farming... Schwenke
Beef Cattle... Hansen
Five Acres & Independence... Kains (this is a very old book, but interesting read)
Storeys Guide to Cattle Raising... Thomas
Making Your Small Farm Profitable... Macher
How to Raise Cattle... Hasheider
A Practical Guide to Successful Farming... edited by Wallace & Moreland (another very old book)

I also subscribe to my breed associations magazine and to the TSCRA publication The Cattleman.

I also have lots of books written by modern ranchers. Every book that I can find by a modern rancher, I buy. You can learn a lot from other's experiences. But not enough ranchers write books.

I've also been to several cattle schools (TAMU and TSCRA's schools) and I keep my notes and the outlines handy.

Reading books is a great way to learn, but there's nothing like real cow experience. Good luck to you.
