We just purchased a long horn heifer, I noticed that she is losing her hair in large patches. Could this be a fungus of some sort or lice? Our other cows don't have this problem.

If you see her rubbing on trees or posts more than likely it is lice. It is that time of year when lice is pretty prevalent. You need to use some type of topical pesticide like " de-lice" on her and the other cattle. It will spread to the other cattle.
I live in California and mange is going around, I washed my Market Steer with medicated horse shampoo for two weeks and it went away, it was kind of a pain but it worked

I use Ivomec--the pour on kind..just pour it down their back..it works good
I am no expert but it is best to isolate the infected animal,better one than twenty. And Lime-sulphur dips weekly for up to six weeks are effective in treating chorioptic mange. Invermectin is pretty quick and sure for beef cattle.

Depending on what part of the country you live in there is a weed that the cow can eat that will give them a virus called photosynthesis call your vet
