    Fatalities Caused by Cattle

Not caused by cattle but... Palmyra, MO — About 9:19 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, the Marion county Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call at 1300 Pocahontas. Information to the sheriff’s office was a man down in a harvested field just outside the Palmyra city limits. During the...

Cow "Hiding" Calf But I Know Where It Is...Do I Worry?

Ditto to what they said and :welcome: .

    Back Rubber

We use both but don't replace the tags according to the manufacturer's suggestion. We dump a couple lbs/head of feed 2 or 3 times a week to keep cattle coming into the working pens. Makes it easier to check on them and they don't associate the pen as a reason to get ignorant. They must go under...

    Allflex A Tags

Had a little trouble getting a fax to go through, but under control now. I received blank long-neck calf tags last year with the farm name imprinted on the bottom front. Requested cow tags this year with the same imprint on the front and added SEX:, BW:, and BD: down the left side of the back...

    How I hate Angus

Had a friend that went on one of those reenactment buffalo hunts in Kansas. An old bull had recently been dethroned and had wandered too close to camp. After a bit, the owner finally ran him off. Told them that was why he got rid of his cattle and went strictly with the buffalo. Said the buffalo...

    I miss Frankie.

Were you around back in the days of Blackpower? He sure kept things from being boring, but I can't really say that I miss him.

    What Would You Do

After looking at this, a little clarification. It was meant to be interpreted as selling her as a cull, but before she gets too bad. Could be read as trying to pass her off as good. Not at all what I meant to say. My fingers and brain don't always consult before typing.

    What Would You Do

I'd opt for #3 before it got bad enough for you to see a dock selling her as a cull. Or, depending on the freezer inventory at the time, have her put into burger, possibly donate her to a food bank - although I personally couldn't afford to do that.

    One of those days

I can remember my grandpa taking my nephew, my brother, and me squirrel hunting. We'd throw a little rock or such off through the trees and he'd whisper, "Shhhhh, shhhhh, don't move." The joke was on us though. He and we would freeze in our tracks (as well as a 10, 11, and 12 yr-old could) for...

    Buying Bred Cows?

Our local barn has a weekly sale but from October through March has a 1st Saturday of the month 'Special Cow Sale' also. Dispersals, estates, cutbacks, etc., are more likely to run through the Special sales and typically bring higher prices. The barn owner has an excellent reputation and if he...

    Buying Bred Cows?

At our local barn's November sale, they sold a lot of 3 LH 4yr-old 3-N-1's for $1200. That's the only cows they ever sell that cheap. With slaughter prices being what they are now, if a bred cow won't bring a $500 bid, they will sell it as a 'weigh' cow, pretty much no matter what she is.

    Buying Bred Cows?

We were fortunate and bought ours before they took off. What we paid $6-700 for 2-3 months ago, were bringing $8-900 at the last sale of the year a week ago.

    Buying Bred Cows?

When we end up with open cows at preg check, we temporarily replace them with short-solid 2nd or 3rd stagers to coincide with our normal Feb and March calving season. If all goes well, we sell their calves, put a little condition on them and sell them back as 1st stagers or opens. We sometimes...

    Left milk in the car

I'd just give the grandkids a big ol' bowl of cereal and stir 'em up a glass of chocolate milk - then keep an eye on 'em for a few hours!

Will a cow hide her calf

We have a couple cows that like to hide them for a week or so. We don't look for the calf where the cow tries to take us. We go exactly opposite. When we are headed in the right direction, momma will usually pass us doin' about 90! :)

    Bred cow prices

Same on this side of the state. Good quality 3rd stagers have been bringing up to 1450 for the last couple weeks around here.
