    who is a rancher

I consider myself a rancher despite the fact that at the moment I have less than 10 heads of cattle. For me, they aren't pets, they're my business. My grandfather managed a dairy farm and considered himself a farmer. Go figure.

Nice place you have. It looks very peaceful. Thanks for sharing.

    sale barn calves

If these are a sample of what runs through your sales barn, I'm jealous. We get a mixed bunch and finds like that are rare. Nice calves. I like them.

    need good vet/resource book

Thanks Bez! I wasn't the one that posted this, but I truly appreciate the link. I had been researching this very subject a few days ago.

    New Calf Arrival

I'm not exactly brand new here, but I am definitely still in the learning stages. Here's my situation. I have a cow that, according to the vet, is going to give birth in the next week or two. With all the rain that we've gotten, and that is still expected, here in central Texas, I haven't...

    What happened here? Pic

The calf looks as though my bull got to her mama, but seeing that you're in TN not TX, I guess I can't offer any help. I like the calf though.

Mongoose, The cheapest I found for just the headgate was at Tractor Supply. I think it was about $550. I'd love to know where you found one for $250?

    Repairing Barb Wire

When I bought my place the owner's family had been ranching on it for over 125 years. Needless to say it had been replaced or repaired several times. My point is that even some of the newer wire was about 30-40 years old and still good. I just repair what I can, but like several people...

    Small Scale Ranching

I think I may have read the report Caustic mentioned when I was working on our ranch's business plan. I want to say that I read somewhere that nation-wide the average rancher raises less than 50 head of cattle on fewer than 100 acres.

    water trough

I've used both metal and RM and definitely prefer the RM. Would easily buy more in the future.

Questions to ask when buying a farm....

I agree with all of the above mentioned. If you don't already have water, negotiate it into the price. Make sure that you are aware of any and all rights of ways or easements on your property. The last thing you want is to have someone coming through your property whenever they want (trust me...

Good Article on Large Animal Vets...

In my neck of the woods it's darn near impossible to find a LA vet. I found one that will only do limited work. I needed to palpate several heads of cattle and had to take them to him. I don't mind doing it because I personally don't have all the right equipment yet, but he told me that he's...

    Butchering Costs

Thanks ElginRinger. I saw one of their ads on the internet. I'll definitely have to give them a call.

    Butchering Costs

Sounds like my place is a bit higher, but not necessarily unreasonable if they're the only ones in the area. Any one on here from or around the Austin, Texas area?

    Butchering Costs

Does anyone know how much it should cost to have a cow slaughtered? I live in Austin, Texas and the only place I found charges a $65 kill fee and then 0.69/lb (hanging weight). Does this seem reasonable?

    I hate Bulls!

I've read on these boards from time to time that people have a lot of trouble with their bulls. Is this an age thing or is it breed? I haven't had trouble with either of my two bulls yet. I'm just wondering if it's just a matter of time?

    Bull or Steer?

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the advice. I've decided that because of his age and the fact that I've never castrated a bull, I'm going to just finish him off as is.

    Bull or Steer?

I have a bull that is a little over 15 months old that is not shaping up to well. He's got decent muscling, but is very small. He took a long time to get this far. I have a Beefmaster bull that I bought for my herd so I don't need the little guy anymore. I was thinking of letting him fatten...

    Cattle Expereinces

I agree with both of you whole heartedly. My grandfather used to manage a dairy farm during some of the toughest years in the last century (Late 20's, 30's). I was too young to benefit from his experiences, but I've been told that he always said that the best school is the school of life and...
